From MAD MEN creator Matthew Weiner : The Romanoffs, an anthology series centered around people who believe themselves to be the modern-day descendants of the Romanov family. The Romanov family was the last dynasty to rule Russia from 1613 until the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917. In July of 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, and their five children and remaining loyal servants were executed, a slaughter that has, over the years, inspired conspiracy theories, including the myth that Nicholas and Alexandra's daughter Anastasia survived the attack. Weiner's unconventional spelling of the Russian surname reportedly reflects both the pronunciation and how it was spelled up until recently.

Not enough Huppert !!
Wasn't expecting the comedic tone but it actually seems to fit quite well with the premise. Could be interesting....

Oh man... I thought this was gonna be about the actual family.
Well, there goes that anticipation. Good cast, though.

Huh. Not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't that. Amazing ensemble though.

There's an Italian actress, Nicoletta Romanoff, who is a real descendant of the Russian royal family (obviously a side branch). They could have hired her 🤔.

I was extremely, painfully excited for this but this looks quite... bad. Maybe it's just a difficult show to market but it looks really broad and all over the place, and a little too smug too. But I will check it out unless the reviews are scathing. It's such an interesting concept, such an intriguing cast, but the marketing is really unexciting.

This will run as a miniseries, no? Could be we'll see a 2016 Best Actress repeat throwdown at the Emmys: Stone, Huppert and Adams (who should've been nominated over Streep). Negga deserves a nod for Preacher but a.) they'd never be that bold, and b.) she wouldn't be competing against these two. Streep herself will likely be nominated as well for Big Little Lies, but again, will likely be in a different category.

Episode 3, titled 'The House of Special Purpose,' this episode had a very Polanski-esque feeling. It's dark, unsettling, and shocking. Christina Hendricks is perfect as the troubled movie star still grieving the loss of her mother, layering Hollywood diva atop shattered nerves. Huppert is absolutely hilarious as the eccentric European actress-turned-auteur. She MUST do more comedy - she is in perfect sync with her character's absurdities! pacinoyes Mattsby - Have you guys seen it yet?

Not yet! I'll probably watch it tonight or tmrw. Some of the reviews, and your Polanski mention, have me extremely excited. Hollywood Reporter said there's "shades of Hitchcockian suspense, Italian giallo hyperstylization and Altman-esque chaotic meta-commentary."
Ep1 I liked, it's interesting, and there are two great performances in it by Marthe Keller and Ines Maleb. But the ep has a sitcom-esque contrivance to it and bland visuals. Ep2 didn't totally work for me but this actress Janet Montgomery might be the new Linda Fiorentino..... Btw even saying "episodes" is a bit odd bc each are like standalone films.
I never watched Mad Men but what Matthew Weiner is doing here must've been difficult; the concept of the show isn't immediately appealing, he's filming all over the globe, and has to maintain a very tricky tonal balancing act.

The first two episodes were a real slog... So repetitive and not at all worthy of their massive runtimes. This one was excellent, though. I see the reference to Hitchock, but not really to Altman or giallo... This just had such an Apartment Trilogy-era Polanski feel to me - please let me know what you think!

I thought it was by far the best episode and I think it illustrates the "problem" with the show - it tries to juggle an awfully lot for you to gear up and invest in a new story, it's insanely ambitious that's for sure. I'm sure a lot of people don't know what to make of it 3 episodes in, me included. This one though was funny and scary and Hendricks was very well cast and appealing, you felt for her here. Huppert well, she was a force of nature of course A lot of shrewd thought went into that performance - there is no more intelligent actor male or female than her - and it's a very "commenting on itself" designed meta-thing here. I have a particular affinity for her comic work but sometimes people forget about it - 8 Women, Chabrol's The Swindle, and Hal Hartley's wonderful Amateur (as the pornography writing, nymphomaniacal, virgin, ex-nun (whew!)...........she's just choosy!). She reminded me a small bit of the Peter O'Toole character in The Stunt Man in a way here - that's a good double feature!.....fans of hers will love this.

Definitely enjoyed the episode, although I found it half-baked. A lot is left off - the ghost girl and or haunted hotel, Huppert's possession, what really happened to the previous girl, to Jack Huston, whether the project was actually shutting down or not. And some of the tonal jumps were abrupt.
Having said that, there are some great scenes - brief as it was the ghost girl was very creepy, the dinner possession (Huppert studied Russian at college btw and side note: partly why I think she should play Gala Dali)....and all the on-set scenes I found very funny and actually quite accurate!
Huppert steals the show - she nails the bothered and brusque quality of a director, but also reflects something deeper especially with the poignant bedside scene, and in some of those later moments (and that amazing entrance) she's hilarious. I'll add to pacinoyes' mention two other comic performances: In Another Country a light, delightful largely improvised triple-performance, she's charismatic and disarming there. And for those that saw her in The Maids w Blanchett, very "girly" and buoyant.
Very much looking forward to Greta next year, probably will be similar to and even better than this episode.
