Have only seen one film from each (their 2017 efforts) and going off of those two I gotta side with Lanthimos.

Based on the 3 films by Lanthimos that I've seen and 2 that I've seen by Guadagnino, probably Lanthimos. While I liked CMBYN way more than Lanthimos's last two films (I still think they're good overall), I'm kind of mixed on A Bigger Splash. Dogtooth is better than all those films though. Suspiria, however, is way higher on my most anticipated list than The Favourite.

I've only seen one Guadagnino, but nothing I've seen from Lanthimos compares to CMBYN. I really dug Sacred Deer but I didn't care for The Lobster sans Carrell and don't feel strongly either way about Dogtooth, so it's Guadagnino for me. I'm expecting to love Suspiria.

I like Lanthimos, but Guadagnino has already directed two masterpieces in just one decade! He's reaching Ang Lee levels of diversity and quality.

Lanthimos made a film that you can literally think about forever - that's Dogtooth and it is actually a better film to think about in retrospect than to sit through even but that's very rare to have anybody make a film like that at all.
Guadagnino is a wonderful artist and can't wait to see Suspiria based on that trailer (and that long runtime!) but you always have guys like that. But there is no one like Lanthimos - his talent could spin out of control and he could make 20 pieces of misanthropic garbage in a row but it doesn't even matter which one of those two you like better, the fact that there is no one like Lanthimos puts him in a different league to which I wouldn't compare them.
I mean he's a very strange bird, an absurd artist for an absurd time......he's the more interesting guy that's for sure - like Sacred Deer's ending and the murder in Dogtooth are scarier and more horrifying and funnier than anything else I can think of. For the most part Lanthimos would like this comparison and really like if people said "CMBYN was so beautiful" ..........he'd probably die laughing from a traditional movie fan assessment like that.

Call Me By Your Name is the best film of the bunch, but Guadagnino is yet to have a trifecta like The Klling of a Sacred Deer/The Lobster/Dogtooth. So Lanthimos is the front runner. But, if I like Suspriria as much as I'm expecting, I might give the italian the edge.

Only seen the Lobster/Sacred Deer/Call me by Your Name but I'll go with Lanthimos. His 2 are in a different universe than CMBYN.
