McDormand stakes a very strong claim of being the best actress of her generation, and she has two performances to her credit that I'd comfortably consider in the pantheon of greatest female performances of all time.
Huppert is a magnificent technical actress, but I'm definitely in the minority when I say that I think she's far too clinical. She can be a force to be reckoned with, but I just think Frannie Mac outclasses her six ways to Sunday.

I prefer Three Billboards to any movie Huppert has been in BY FAR, but she really was just giving us Fargo again. How are those two roles even remotely similar, other than the fact that her characters' names begin with "M" and she speaks English in them?

The more I see of Huppert, the bigger a fan I find myself becoming...still this is McDormand we're talking and I rate her pretty damn highly.

Well Huppert is the single greatest actress of all time - any country - and she's much more clearly that to me than any male actor would be imo, but these 2 are similar to each other in a sort of earthy toughness sort of way. Love them both.
McDormand is a 2 time Oscar Winner and a Triple Crown Winner but she's probably the least accomplished of someone you can say that about - she basically only has 5-7 "special" roles (or so) on film - so while I love her she just doesn't have anywhere near the total work to stand with Huppert who is like at Olivier levels for that career achievement stuff.

One can do many different things, the other is McDormand.

McDormand - so while I love her she just doesn't have anywhere near the total work to stand with Huppert who is like at Olivier levels for that career achievement stuff. That's interesting you say that. I think Huppert is the female Olivier. In that, they're both the stand out thespian of their eras. Olivier the old days, Huppert new. There's no one quite like both in either eras. They both have a wide extensive filmography encompassing 15+ works that can stand well with each other on any given day. Most of their films are movies that most film buffs aren't interested in, and have praise for their acting if nothing else. Both are kinda obscure and esoteric once you get past a general impression of them. Both have high-brow stage acting cred. And they don't usually appeal to bros - McDormand can appeal to the dudebros who enjoy Coens and McDonaugh - because of her smash-mouth line deliveries and general comedic attitude. This is where I think Huppert is Olivier's counterpart. Any thoughts on this, pacinoyes? I think that's pretty dead on target - very nice analysis. Olivier is a favorite of mine because no male can compete with the amount of great performances he has across all media. There's lots of ways to judge actors but that one is a pretty overwhelming one and it's all his - he owns it, he had the ambition to do it, the will to do it. In Huppert's case she has that, but then goes further even and it is very modern - she makes uncanny, unique, almost baffling choices that eventually make perfect sense by the end of a film. It's really exciting when you watch her at her very best because it sometimes doesn't reveal itself right away or obviously. I think the reason bros don't get her appeal is she doesn't pander to to them ever anyway - she never plays sexy to overtly win the audiences affection like that. On the contrary in some of her greatest roles like Story of Women and La Separation she is in effect having sex like a man would in real life, without apologies or guilt or concern for how that appears to a viewer - she forces you to accept what she's doing not what another actress in the part might do. For people who don't get how great she is, I'd recommend those 2 films to see how much of tightrope she walks. Makes a lot of other stuff seems like BS......
