Bleh. It's a shame because I like both leads, but the style looks incredibly irritating to me.

The performances to me at least look positively spectacular and not mere impersonations. Williams is the best American actress of her generation - and that includes those with Oscars while she has none (Stone, Lawrence, Portman, Larson) and without (Dunst etc.).

I would prefer Stone and Portman any day of the week but Williams is very talented for sure.

Anybody see ep1 yet???
Really great start. The editing is excellent - the transitions, the choreographed scenes, the incorporated flashbacks. Williams is solid but if the ep is anything to go by this is Sam Rockwell's show. They might, and probably will, shift the POV.... but ep1 is in Fosse's head and Rockwell has a few brilliant scenes so far like his dinner with the producer. It ends with quite a powerful moment btwn the two leads, I kinda got chills - not realizing the entire ep was building to the moment to have that impact.
Can't wait for more -- I'm a sucker for this agitated creative process on-set stuff.

This seems to have started with little fanfare, but I plan to binge it when all the episodes are out. Sounds very intriguing.

I liked Ep 2 but not as good as ep1, feels a little more squeezed into the rotating structure, and without the gut-punch payoff that ep1 had bc it reruns a little of what we've already seen. Some standout sequences - the audition meeting, the hotel room eavesdropping to the mambo dance. Williams very good this ep, imbues her early years scenes with warmth and charm, and you can already sense in her later years the charm still there but aged with cautious reflection. Rockwell great again, softer vocally in the early years a good touch - starting to think this could be a major performance from him if he keeps up. Most actors would swing for the fences in some of the scenes, but there's a real ease to his performance, and he touches it with pangs of anger, ambition, insecurity..., like the hotel room scene, how he takes and internalizes the information, and then self propels a deeper and broader questioning of his entire life and talent.
@tyler you catch any eps yet?

Ep3 is Williams ep, and she owns.
I like the choreographed intro - Rockwell's always had moves - but this ep is really an emphatic, emotional portrait of Verdon, as a woman, a mother, a performer, how they often overlap, how she's undermined and humiliated by the same industry that has given her elation and purpose. It's very affecting how Williams plays the scenes, like how fatigued she is against Rockwell, or how her modesty and charm offset her discomfort when the director is giving her notes. Some of the flashbacks feel a little kerplunked in, but nevertheless a very good ep, a great Williams.

Three episodes in, Michelle Williams is giving the performance of her career. She certainly is. Is anyone else getting Ellyn Burstyn vibes? Cant quite put my finger on it or desribe it well but I'm loving it.

I was going to post “Not usually a huge fan of Ryan Murphy but this has been really good” but then I discovered that Ryan Murphy actually has nothing to do with this show. Strange, it just seems like something he would do and. I guess I assumed. Kinda reminded me of Feud but I’m actually enjoying this more.
Anyways, Rockwell and Williams are really killing it so far. I’ve seen Cabaret and whatnot but I don’t know much about the personal life of these people so I can’t speak for accuracy but I’m definitely immersed in their stories.

Williams' rendition of "Where Am I Going?" from Sweet Charity in this week's episode was one of the most beautiful, moving things I've seen in a long time.

Last episode was probably my favorite so far. Rockwell is doing a fantastic job. The interspersed “stand-up” scenes were really great, but damn, that was a really sad episode.

For those of you who Hulu, whole show was added today!
So above I put up lil reviews of the first 3 eps but then I wanted to finish the show before breaking down my thinking which before was too 'who was better this ep?' - I have to say while watching Rockwell impressed me a lot but some months later now and it's the Williams perf that I keep thinking about. They're both great, really great.
Rest of the show - Ep4 is stirring and kinda exciting but very hurried and the climax (that many praised) felt ridiculous to me. Ep5 I like the idea but the writing is particularly weak this ep. Ep6 snaps back a bit and Williams is really cookin'. Ep7 both are dynamite, aged, edged, a lot of subtle quiet but powerful moments btwn them. Ep8 a very fine finale, although I was thinking with so much to cover they could've went 10 eps; the death scene, with the flashbacks, an easy device but, I mean, it got me.

I started seeing this yesterday. Had a blast with episode 1, and it got me immediately into episode 2, which was equally great.
Williams is doing very good work here. I wish she didn't sound so affected in her manner of speaking, but if that's really how the real Gwen Verdon spoke, kudos to Williams. This is a great role for her, it's allowing her to do lots of different things and show a wide variety of emotions. Can't say I'm a fan of her singing, but I've heard worse; in the most emotional scenes, though, she comes off strong and fully convincing.
As for Rockwell, this seems like the role he was born to play. Not a single false note so far, this is the best I've seen him in.
Finished eposide 3 right now, here's hoping it keeps up with this level of quality until the end.
