Seems like one of the most common criticisms stems from it being a Part 1 - that it's mostly a lot of set-up without really getting too much into the meat of things. Also looks like some ppl are finding it too "cold."

This ain't the Sci-fi masterpiece you were waiting for.

85 on RT 76 on Metacritic after 17 reviews This ain't the Sci-fi masterpiece you were waiting for. I mean Blade Runner 2049 has similar stats to that (will likely finish around the same) and that was a masterpiece sooooo I don’t see your point The biggest criticism seems to be that it’s only half the story, and since it’s Dune: Part 1, I’ll take it. First half of the story feels like first half of a story? Who’d have thunk it.

The raves all say pretty much what I was expecting: this is Villeneuve at his Villeneuve-iest. People who loved BR2049 will really love this, people who hated it will really hate this. Most of the early criticism both scares me that we're not getting Dune: Part II and massively assures me that this first chapter is exactly the adaptation I wanted.
Also, I think this movie is going to cause a lot of polarized online debate about white savior tropes and other elements of the novel that could be deemed "problematic" in the 21st century. This is going to be annoying on both sides because fans of the book will be quick to point out that challenging these very narratives is ENTIRELY the point of the series as a whole, whereas non-readers will only have the first half of the first book to react to, and this could create problems with this first movie seemingly championing cliches it will later destroy... but not in THIS first movie. We'll see if this becomes the new LotR or Warcraft in the coming months. But I can't wait!

I’m not even a huge Chalamet fan but a big part of me hopes that his reportedly strong showing here will shut up all the pre-emptive naysayers.

Listening to the full sketchbook album right now, and am digging it so far. "Mind-killer" is probably the weirdest track, though parts of it sound to me like a more full-throated version of some of the techniques used in the Blade Runner 2049 score. Really love the choral passages in other sections of the album, which actually remind of Zimmer's score to Lion King in their majesty and grandeur, only not as warm, but more otherworldly and alien and combined with a kind of sweeping exoticism reminiscent of Lawrence of Arabia. Looking forward to hearing this in the context of the film!
And also there's...... bagpipes.

I would kill for Joey Tribbiani (not Matt Le Blanc, Joey Tribbiani) as Feyd.

I would kill for Joey Tribbiani (not Matt Le Blanc, Joey Tribbiani) as Feyd. He's Chalamet's butt double. He’s also able to fill in as a full frontal double since he’s not circumcised, which is required.

Yeah I think there's a possibility that this might do $500 million worldwide even with HBO Max availability muting the revenue a bit stateside. Fingers crossed it doesn't have the same fate as Blade Runner 2049 in US and Asia.

How much did this movie cost? Can't remember. $165 million, could be more I think if it makes min $100 mil here and approx. $300-400 overseas, they will greenlight the sequel.

IMO the final trailer is the best one yet (also loved the tagline at the very end with Zendaya's character saying "This is only the beginning") That gets me so fucking hyped! ( it also gives me more confidence that we'll hopefully get a Part 2) fingers crossed!

Hell yeah Denis! Haven't had a chance to see Part I yet but I'm glad he's getting a chance to follow through on his vision. And no HBO Max either, full theatrical release. Way to go
