Question is: is it opening the festival or is it playing in comp?

The hype keeps building, but I won't rest until I hear them greenlight the sequel.

The hype keeps building, but I won't rest until I hear them greenlight the sequel. With Dune having a budget of $165M, I think its commercial performance will ultimately decide whether there is a sequel or not. Arrival did very well, but it also had a much smaller budget. Blade Runner 2049, however, flopped with a similar budget despite having bigger stars like Gosling and Ford. In short, Dune has its work cut out for it.

Yeah, it's an uphill climb, and with COVID still a lingering concern, it's gonna be even tougher . . . but I'm gonna be there opening day. Same as every Villeneuve since Prisoners.

It's just a three-week bump to a friendlier awards slot, tbf. Not like The Northman getting delayed half a year.

Sadly I doubt those dates will be the same here.

I do think that trailer was a bit too packed for my liking, as I much preferred the moody vagueness of the teaser, but I get that they need to put a lot into it to get butts in seats. Still, some excellent imagery and I like that we can get a hint of the performances here.

Holy fucking shit !That was a great /well made new trailer. It really helped set up the story. The way it was edited gave the casual movie goer a eye opening look into what DUNE is about (but without spoiling that much of anything) . Masterfully done. Also I am loving all of these individual character posters. My favorite being that of David Dastmalchian(criminally underrated American actor). He's previously worked with Villeneuve on Prisoners & Blade Runner 2049. . He talked to Slashfilm about his DUNE character (Piter de Vries, the twisted Mentat) Sorry if already posted (didn't see it in here) winteriscoming.net/2021/07/13/david-dastmalchian-twisted-dune-character-piter-de-vries/And what is a Mentat, you ask? In the Dune universe, a Mentat is a person who has been so thoroughly trained in logic and reasoning that they are basically a human computer, actual computers having been banned for millennia (there was a Terminator-style robot war in the distant past, it was a whole thing). Only Piter is special, because he’s sick in the head and willing to use his intelligence to get what he wants even if it means hurting others. His cruel is only surpassed by his boss, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). Together, they make formidable enemies for young Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his family.
“I guarantee you, any other character I’ve ever played, there are things about them, that they may be extreme, they may look wacky or have some kind of crazy power, but there’s always something I can latch onto and connect to a human being that I’ve either known for a part of my own personality that I’m familiar with, obviously, because it’s me,” Dastmalchian told Slashfilm. “With Piter, there’s that psychopathy that comes from being a twisted Mentat, that is frightening and disturbing. And to put myself in his mindset was hard. So to utter a language, because Piter’s brain operates at such a high level, he is for all intents and purposes, a human computer, speaking in the highly specific way in which the language would come out was actually … It made perfect sense. It seemed to really add a great deal to the character. It felt more like an assist than an obstacle, if that makes sense.”
Dastmalchian is a big Dune fan from way back, calling it “by far one of the greatest sci-fi novels ever written.” It sounds like he was already familiar with Piter before taking the job. “Piter de Vries was always utterly fascinating and disturbing and a dark place to go,” he said. “I took a great deal of inspiration from the book. But then when I read the script, I was like, ‘Oh, he’s right there.’ And obviously being in the hands of someone like Denis, it was kind of a no brainer, just what he wanted him to look and move and feel like. Denis is very good at communicating those things.”
[T]he script is so true to the spirit of the novel. There is an elevated sense of purpose and tone. It’s such grand science fiction storytelling, and it’s so mind-blowing visually. But then when you get down to the characters and the way they speak, you just have to approach it the way that you do with any character. And for me, finding that was very, very challenging. Because Piter [de Vries] is not like any human I’ve ever encountered before.

Nice trailer and the photography looks great. Not knowing a single thing about the mythology of Dune, I couldn't keep up with the general plot by watching the trailer but I liked it nevertheless.

I read the first book (and hated it) fifteen or so years ago, and I couldn't keep up either. Atreides family is getting killed or summat, also they're dirty capitalists, and the only good Atreides has to... you know, be good. I'm not at all excited for this, as it looks pretty bland in every way (and Villeneuve is inconsistent). But the core idea seems solid. The only good fantasy epic in movie history has been the OG Star Wars, so I'm hoping for the best.

I thought this was a terrific trailer and I'm all in for a huge sweeping epic with a sense of grandiosity and eye-popping visuals. I love me shit like that. But that reveal shot of Chalamet at the end of the trailer in the golden costume looks so iffy. It's funny how they put what seems like a shot with unfinished effects as their money shot. The other effects look amazing, obviously. Which makes the quality of this shot all the more baffling.

yeeeeeah at this point I'm mostly in for the spectacle. Prod. design, costumes, Fraser's visuals, and VFX (minus the golden armor shot) all look gangbusters but as someone who knows only as much about Dune as my brother told me from geeking out about the books, this marketing hasn't been hooking me like at all.

Dune is absolutely one of those books that's tough to sell on the story alone, and it will be the spectacle aspect of it that will get audiences in. Come for the worms, stay for the Harkonnens.
