No, I think it reveals the weaknesses in each category - but especially Lead Actor to the point where its almost a crisis. People complained that Actress was too stacked but that's what makes it an Oscar race not an everybody gets a gold star race.
But last years Lead Actor was so bad that when Franco got into trouble you couldn't even come up with names for the race much less worthy names - Tom Hanks? Denzel Washington? They were not worthy and there were no other performances either .......a few other performances that could not get nominated because their distributor couldn't buy their way it (Stanton unfortunately etc) which makes it look even worse.
The Emmy awards, in this decade have started to outpace the Oscars for depth in the Best Actor Miniseries/Movie field and so have the even worse Tony awards which basically nominate a huge percentage of the eligible nominees in plays (think about that - how many guys were even eligible for a best actor Tony in any year?).
I'd go back to 5 BP nominees too, but ..........

I'd be fine with six, but 10 is way too much.

No way. They struggled to find 5 worthy best actor nominees this year.10 would water down the quality even more.

Hell no! 5 is fine. I've checked in with Donald Sutherland, Martin Sheen, Steve Buscemi, Guy Pearce, Timothy Spall, Brendan Gleeson and John Goodman, and they all agree.

I think we should have 10 BP nominees every year, the amount of snubs is incredible and the choosing-pool is huge. For other categories, I'm fine with 5 nominees only.

No, however I push back on the sentiment that because they "struggle" to find five worthy nominees currently that it would be problematic. The reason they sometimes struggle is not due to the lack of high quality performances, but rather an unwillingness to look outside the campaign trail. There is a possibility that they would leave their comfort zone of "acceptable" nominees and in turn better choices could arise with a full 10, although I am still opposed to the idea nonetheless.

No. And for the acting categories it would further aggravate the dumb rule that an actor can't get nom'd twice in the same category - which of course motivates category fraud and not to mention undermining talent itself. That's a rule only for actors. With every other cateogry (Soderbergh did it for example) they can be nom'd twice or w/e. If you're doing great work, doubly so, why lop away their due? And I mean.....how else is Pacino gonna get nom'd for supporting in Irishman AND the QT, right?

I wish they'd go back to five even for BP. If you're going to give awards at least try to make it exclusive and special and not where getting nominated is a participation trophy.

Eh, while I agree that most categories don't need more than five, I don't feel that way about Best Picture. Plenty of film critics have a hard time narrowing down even a Top 10 at year's end because they've seen so much great stuff. Obviously the Academy makes some pretty lame/uninspired choices which makes 10 films feel unnecessary, but if they actually had more people involved who were...oh, I don't know, passionate about movies, it would be a good thing to represent more rather than fewer.

I think there's a little bit of a "drop off" for me there after a certain point. I usually have an easy time identifying a top five (of anything) of things that truly stand out, maybe with one filler spot, but then when you get beyond that ranking things becomes so arbitrary. The difference between no. 10 and no. 11 is usually so tiny.
