Christian Bale - Cheney Steve Carrell - Beautiful Boy Bradley Cooper - A Star is Born Ryan Gosling - First Man Hugh Jackman - Front Runner newbie alert. This year is probably gonna be a tough one. Huh? I'm just making a general prediction. It's really early to tell, especially when all of these films have yet to be released. Anything can change.

This year the academy might not nominated any newcomers at all, for all we know.

[Bradley Cooper] could easily bump up to nine total nominations in the span of a decade. Every day this world strays further away from God's light. bruh dont let me catch u out on the streets Edit: In all seriousness, if A Star Is Born is the big hit that it's being predicted to be, Bradley is winning something. He's got four nominations and is probably considered "due" at this point.

I'm updating my predix
Warner Bros maybe won't release The Mule this year (too busy horsing around with A Star Is Born?) even though there's room for a late Dec roll-out in their schedule, we'll see. Gran Torino's release date was announced before it started filming, so that quick production might've been to meet that date. The Mule could be taking its time.
So instead, gotta put Dafoe in there, actually maybe at the top. Could have a lot of buzz after Venice + NYFF, would be his 4th nod, he may well be the veteran no-brainer pick. Bale/Jackman cancel each other out right now at least on paper. Gosling's film comes out early October, not very prime - Pitt could take some attention from him later in the season - but he's probably a lock for a nom at this point....

Dafoe's definitely one to watch out for. I'm not crazy about its distributor (CBS Films, whose only real awards hit they've had is Hell or High Water), but he's probably got some goodwill from last year lingering and if the part gets a resounding response at Venice/NYFF, he feels like he could be in the hunt. Pitt for what? Ad Astra? Man, so many people I see are going hard for that as a contender, but I just don't see it. A James Gray sci-fi vehicle? They've never gone for him even at his most mainstream. I'm looking forward to it (mostly in the hopes that Ruth Negga gets a plum role in it), but I'm getting Interstellar vibes from it, where people think it will be a bigger smash than what it gets in the end.

In fairness to James Gray, his last three films (all solid) were released in the first half of the year without awards aim. This one is at least positioned right at the core of the season. But I'm actually not really looking forward to it; I'm not a fan of Interstellar or usually ambitious sci-fis. At some point I imagine people will grow tired of these serious minded space dramas (or maybe not) but anyway that's what I meant in terms of First Man losing attention, bc it won't be standing out (perhaps).

Well, Weinstein pretty well scuppered The Immigrant's chances after Gray balked at his "suggestions" for edits, so I'd consider that film a victim of Harvey Scissorhands. I don't feel like First Man and Ad Astra will be competing for the same "spot." One of them is a highly anticipated follow-up for a recent Best Director winner, whereas the other is from a more eclectic filmmaker who hasn't yet been embraced by the industry. Pitt and Plan B are good weapons to have in this film's arsenal (certainly more than Hunnam/Pattinson/Amazon were for The Lost City of Z), but on paper, it still feels like Chazelle has the upper hand, at least for now. I know test screenings for First Man have been somewhat underwhelming and apparently there's good buzz for Ad Astra, but critical adulation and industry recognition don't go hand-in-hand. Besides, will the Gray film be an acting showcase?
