1. Kahn - Easily. The acting equivalent of a knockout punch. Snubbed of a win again for the 2nd straight year. When will they learn?
2. Ladd - She's.... very good, essentially playing a warm lady friend. Not sure if she deserves a nomination, but most of us here haven't seen enough 1974 films to name many better ones.
3. Bergman - She's... fine. Of course it's not her best work, but who cares? The hate she gets primarily from dumb Queenies (most who haven't even seen any other of the candidates this year) vexes me. They were just interested in Lauren Bacall above all. Glad there aren't any of those who've made it here. Ok she has Madeline Kahn's Oscar, but Greer Garson has hers in 1942, Joan Crawford in 1945, Jane Fonda in 1978, and let's go counting the other times.
4. Shire - She's... good. Never thought of her as an actress though, mostly "that girl in all-time big hits." I like her shades of grieving and strength in this film though, she plays off of Pacino well, she was definitely the way I would've written her in that stage of her character's life, so once again smart writing by Coppola. I liked all 4 of the nominees I've seen - no issues with any.

I've only seen three.
Kahn is simply phenomenal and is one of my all-time favourite performances. Along with Marisa in Vinny and Whoopi in Ghost, they make up a holy trinity of comedic supporting actress acting and it's a shame she doesn't have the win too.
I guess Shire was decent enough, but she had no place in that line-up when they could have nominated Diane Keaton. I like Bergman I guess, but she was barely even a Top 3 supporting actress in her own film, never mind of the year.

I dunno about 74 (I like them all), but I'd argue that Shire - who is barely an actress herself - is flat out awful in the first Godfather film, in fact she's every bit as awful as people who wrongly "think" Sofia Coppola is in the third film I'd say.
.............. and come to think of it, for all the people who don't like Godfather III - Shire is actually better in III than she is in II (in a somewhat surrogate twist on the Lady Macbeth role).

pacinoyes - I also think Shire got better as the Godfather series went on. She went from "Oh... that girl" (Part 1) to "Starting to look like a serious actress" (Part 2) to "Starting to one-up Pacino" (Part 3). People are still complaining about Sofia Coppola's performance even 28 years later?? Oh....my...god....

Diane Ladd is perfection in that role Cortese not so far behind Kahn was very good but I felt she could've one more scene to seal the deal Bergman did the best she could with her material Shire remains the weak link in her film.
