Farnsworth is all time worthy. I did love Dern though.

See, now this comparison is worth doing. Throw Stanton in Lucky in the mix and you've got a hell of a trinity.
Dern is brilliant and would've made a damn fine winner (shame that he was up against two even better turns that year, one of whom wound up winning), but Farnsworth is the best male performance of the 1990s and my #3 of all time. Heartbreaking, searingly honest, and he makes it look so damn effortless. Crowe, Spacey, Washington and Penn (and all the rest) should've just gone home that year and given it to Diamond Dick.

I probably barely prefer Dern. He would have been my favorite lead actor performance of that year if it were a normal year without Ejiofor/Isaac (neither of whom won anyway)

Dern
Farnsworth is great but I really didn't care for Straight Story

Love both but I'd give the edge to Farsworth.
