Who did it better as a happy-go-lucky psychopath? I think both are exceptional performances and the highlight of both Bale and Kidman's careers (especially impressive in the latter's case), but Kidman's turn, which is both deeply funny and genuinely scary, probably ranks in my all-time top 10 performances, so I give her the edge.
In all fairness though, I watched American Psycho for the first time very recently, so I may come to appreciate Bale's performance even more in time.

As much as I love Kidman's performance, I think Bale is playing a more delicate balancing act, especially in the third act of the film where the tone of the performance could so easily go off the rails much like the character's psyche, and yet he does not miss a beat.

Kidman. I really, really don't care for American Psycho or Bale in it.
