I dunno, you could make a case that they wanted to bonk each other's brains out.

Nicholson/Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (yes, I consider Fletcher lead, deal with it) Finch/Dunaway in Network (yes, I know she and Holden are romantically involved, but technically it still counts here) Macy/McDormand in Fargo

Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, Driving Miss Daisy Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, Mad Max: Fury Road Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby Arnold Schwarzenegger, Edward Furlong, and Linda Hamilton, Terminator 2: Judgment Day
And I'd consider Lost in Translation a romance.

Kathy Bates and James Caan, Misery (you'd have to be pretty twisted to consider this a romantic relationship lmao) Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, Gone Girl Bates clearly views the relationship as romantic (or at least, she tries to push it as such), so even if it's completely unrequited, I would say it technically counts. And Pike/Affleck had moments of romance in the early stages of the film, so . . .

There's not many that come to mind. After Life does though, which is one of my all time favorites.
I guess Wild Strawberries would count too.
Oh, and Dogville if you count Tom as a main character.

Even though he was nominated, that is by far Lemmon's most underrated performance.

And Pike/Affleck had moments of romance in the early stages of the film, so . . . To me, Annie Wilkes' idea of romance is too perversed to be taken seriously. It's just an obsession coded as love. With Pike and Affleck, I didn't even remember this part until you mentioned it . The only memory I have for this film is how much they hated each other's guts.

And I'd consider Lost in Translation a romance. I didn't see it that way. For me, Bob and Charlotte are closer than lovers... Consider that two people, separated by a generation, who seemingly will have nothing in common, can meet by chance in a foreign city and have the most intense, meaningful connection - experiencing the same problems in both of their (optically radically different) lives. It's not sexual or romantic, but it is emotional and deeply personal.
