Superhero films provide a great opportunity for composers to really go larger-than-life and create memorable themes but unfortunately this is an opportunity that we see used rarely these days. Still, what are some of your favorite superhero themes?
My top 5:
1. Superman by John Williams - no contest for the #1 spot for me. Williams's theme is one of my all-time favorites as well as the entire score itself. It just so perfectly captures everything about the spirit of that character and that movie. The optimism, the heroic pathos and the fun of it is just perfect.
2. Batman by Danny Elfman - so moody and so awesome, it's a perfect theme that defines the character and his world.
3. Spider-Man by Danny Elfman - that main title theme is one of the anthems of my childhood. Every time I hear that very opening percussion I get slight chills.
4. RoboCop by Basil Poledouris - even though I don't usually think of RoboCop as a superhero movie...it kinda really is! So I'm happily giving it a spot here for Basil Poledouris's fantastically energetic theme that just pumps you up and gets you ready to go patrolling with Murphy.
5. The Incredibles by Michael Giacchino - it's just so much fun! Cheeky, even funny in a great way and also really memorable and exciting.
H/M to The Avengers by Alan Silvestri - MCU has been surprisingly low on proper themes for their superheroes but I think Silvestri did a great job creating an instantly recognizable and properly heroic theme for The Avengers - a theme that works great when you just listen to it and especially great when it's used in a badass way in the films themselves.
And also H/Ms to Elfman's Hulk and Horner's Spider-Man themes. I quite like Wonder Woman's one also even though when it was first introduced in BvS it sounded silly to me (but that was just in the context of that film and that score).
