1. Gone Baby Gone (a strong debut, albeit one that is a bit rough around the edges) 2. The Departed (incredibly inconsistent and workmanlike) 3. Mystic River (Penn's histrionics drag it down immensely, and Robbins isn't much better; Bacon does most of the heavy lifting)

1. The Departed - 7.5 (weighed down significantly by Nicholson's performance) 2. Mystic River - 7 (just fine) 2. Gone Baby Gone - 6 (pretty forgettable)

I think I see these differently than most:
Mystic River is a good movie - but it should be greater - and what drags it down for me is Tim Robbins with a too broad, almost ludicrously pantomime performance. Penn as I mentioned in his own thread - does that "part of a performance" thing again - he is very great here as the grieving father. But whether you buy him as a store owner, and devoted husband to Linney and whether you think he's intentionally shifting away from those parts of the character is arguable.
The Departed has many things I love in it - great dialog, fine acting, inspired direction but its plot mechanics are a bit shaky - coincidences, too many near misses, cell phone wtf-isms, etc.
Gone Baby Gone is well cast, and well performed but I thought it was a big nothing plot wise I guessed the ending really so I just watched it check off all the boxes. It's good but not great to me.....

The Departed - Still one of my favorite films. I suppose it has lost a bit of its luster over the years, but I still find it immensely rewatchable and featured (up until The Wolf of Wall Street) DiCaprio's best performance.
Mystic River - I love this as well. I'm one of the few strong supporters of Penn here. Not only his win for it but the performance in general. I think almost all of the performances are great actually. There's just different styles of acting going on, so when you put Penn's BIG portrayal against the quietness of someone like Bacon it's easy to feel that Penn was trying too hard. But I think the performance styles fit in with the story and had no issues there.
Gone Baby Gone - One of the best debut features in recent memory. I love the fact that it felt (to me anyway) almost like the cop drama version of Good Will Hunting. Obviously with the Boston setting, but also with the way it was shot and with tight-knit neighborhood feel. There's a sure-handedness at work here that makes it all the more surprising to know that it's a directorial debut. And I still feel that Ed Harris was robbed of an Oscar nomination here.

They all get 8/10s from me. Three very solid, particularly well acted crime dramas.

The Departed is one of my 10/10s. I love it dearly and find it endlessly rewatchable.
Gone Baby Gone is a wonderful film, and a solid 9/10, but is missing that punchiness and rewatchability that The Departed has.
I haven't seen Mystic River, and I constantly forget it exists. Netflix needs to bring this too me, or I will likely never see it.

The Departed is better than the other two, and there's not much distance between those. I like all 3.

1. The Departed 2. Gone Baby Gone 3. Mystic River
The first is fantastic, while Gone Baby Gone is very good, and Mystic River is solid. All three are "good films" basically.
