1. Timothy Spall - All or Nothing (virtually unrecognized for his work here) 2. Adam Sandler, Punch-Drunk-Love (the key saving grace of that film) 3. Adrien Brody, The Pianist 4. Hugh Grant, About a Boy 5. James Spader, Secretary Honorable mention for Nic Cage. I'm torn on DDL, who I love generally but find his work in Gangs a bit too messy. I credit some of that to Scorsese's incredibly sloppy directing, and DDL's performance veers into camp more than once, like when he kills Brendan Gleeson and then breaks the fourth wall gloating: "That, my friends, is the minority vote." It's a bit of goofy cynicism that can't be taken seriously but acts like it wants to be. Scorsese maybe gets the blame, but the result too often is that DDL's performance comes off as more irritatingly smug than genuinely frightening. It's a mixed bag. DiCaprio is pretty good in CMIYC, and Jack Nicholson is alright even if he is ridiculously overrated in a patently bland movie. Haven't seen Caine ( Quiet American) or Norton yet. Don't see his name mentioned that often, but Javier Cámara also deserves a shoutout for Talk to Her.

The big 3 are all close but Brody slightly ahead of Nicholson and then DDL.
This is really the role - Brody has a great role in a very great film and he perfectly serves the film - you don't really realize how great that is until you see it the 2nd time because Nicholson and DDL are the best things in their films.

It was a great year, but I personally think Daniel Day-Lewis was way better than the others.
Caine, Pacino, Brody and probably Nicholson complete my line-up.
