I guess De Havilland is "The American"? I like Kerr fine, but De Havilland is definitely better. Her best performances are truly elite (Heiress, Snake Pit, even GWTW).

I'll bump this because after seeing Kerr in Tea and Sympathy and The King & I this is much closer than I originally thought.

Haven't seen enough of either, but from what I have seen, I give Kerr the edge.

Both great. But Kerr was greater.

De Havilland is a British citizen born in Tokyo. She got American citizenship, and eventually French one, way later. She has been living in France for over half a century. I wouldn't discriminate between the two calling Kerr British and De Havilland American. Anyway, Olivia.

It's interesting to note that this was like 4-1 for De Havilland before I bumped it and then we got a flood of Kerr votes.

Oooh, tough one. Olivia's got two all-timer performances to her credit and I'd argue that along with her sister (and Bergman), she dominated the 1940s in a way hardly anyone has ever done with a decade. But then she just really nosedives after that. Kerr's got a bit more on her side in terms of general longevity and versatility, but I'll still throw a vote de Havilland's way.
