I don't love the ending but the ending is ok.........and everything else is amazing and essential Mann to me. There are so many classic Mann touches in the film - mostly related to what a great writer he is - Robert Prosky's brilliant speech standing over Caan is worthy of David Mamet, Caan and his self loathing to the adoption woman where his money can't make him legit in that world and his amazing dismissal scene of Weld which not only rings true but precedes Heat for the thoughts behind the criminal mindset.
It's not Heat but it's at least as good as Collateral for sure to me.....and because it was early on in his career it seemed more fresh and less formulaic too.....and of course the score is simultaneously icy and haunting.

I dig Mann but I didn't get the hype with this one. Apart from the cinematography and score, it felt like pretty typical genre fare. I don't remember that the story or characters were very interesting either. I don't know...whatever people love about it I just didn't get.

Better than Heat (yeah, I said it!), not quite as good as Collateral. Prosky is an ace villain.

Mann's brilliant script and stylish direction are great eye candy and James Caan gives a stellar performance.
