Ooh, that is tough! I adore both films, and all four ladies do impressive work. Mara is head and shoulders above the rest for me, but then I'd probably put Blanchett at the bottom (relatively speaking - she was still really good). I'll hand it to them two, but only just.

Mara is good, but Blanchett is so woefully inconsistent (some very strong moments backstopped by career-low melodrama) that there's no way I can take a Carol vote seriously against the Melancholia gals. Dunst and Gainsbourg, by contrast, give some of the best symbiotic performances since Hulce/Abraham and Hurt/Julia in the '80s.
