Saw this on Netflix and I remembered hearing good things about it, so I said fuck it and decided to watch it.
Oh my. I loved the hell out of this movie. Reeves can do no wrong. Out of the movies I've seen from him, he's four of four. Cloverfield being his worst (which I still loved). I was really invested in the story of this movie, and the acting all around was great, as well as the soundtrack. The track 'New Day on an Old Lake" being the standout for me. I'll probably watch it again here soon.
I've read arguments about what movie is better (this or Let the Right One In) and it seems like they're pretty much the exact same except for a few minor changes, and the changes made in this one are changes that I personally like better.

It is a good remake, I don't think it has the thing that really makes Let The Right One In so special though which is how patient and atmospheric and eerily silent that film is. But having said that its sort of like Insomnia - an American version that you can appreciate completely on its own terms.

It's well shot but I think there's nothing about it that makes it stand out. A wholly unnecessary remake that doesn't do anything that new or different. Then there's the Moretz problem too. It's not bad but I think it's pretty overrated.

Yeah, Jango pretty well said it best. As far as remakes go, it's got strong cinematography (although not as good as its forebear) and it's competently scripted and acted, but it doesn't really do much to justify its existence when the original film works as well as it does.

Some of the scenes are quite disturbing and unexpected. The cinematography creates them and its mind blowing. I still think this is a decent remake, but I have to stick with the original.

IM it even gonna bother with it, since I have the original I personally found it awful. In the video I posted above, I agree with every point made about the film (not necessarily the points about the original, but they nail everything wrong with the remake). I could appreciate that Reeves was attempting something new.... but he didn't. He tried to create the exact same story (even keeping the same shots!), but his character beats are so, so Hollywood.

It's a poor mans Let the Right One In, but then Let the Right One In is one of the best films I've ever seen, so being its notably weaker English language remake isn't that big an insult. I'll always be on the side of those who say it's a good film, but never on the side of those who claim it to be better than the original.
