I don’t see why SPC would give this a summer release date if they saw Oscar winning potential here. They also sat on the film for a year instead of releasing it right away, both things they didn’t do with Still Alice.

Looks fine, nice to see Glenn in a seemingly strong part again and Christian Slater getting a decent project. As for Oscars, I doubt. SPC has nothing else this year so far but it could change and they're obviously not confident in the film enough as they gave it a summer release.

I think it looks too desperately Oscar begging and heavy headed to really click. Apart from Close, the rest of the cast has never made me have a lot of faith in the project and the release date cements it.

Maybe, but an Oscar post-2000 is really just indicative of how good your studio is in buying a nomination or a win - it doesn't mean what it meant, period.
Now, having said that, there is something culturally happening to reward older performers - it's in the arts in general - and it's the last cultural taboo - being ageist is the next #metoo movement (lol) and there's only been 1 Actor win at 70+ and a long time since a female did it. It's going to change and there's going to be a push towards it (Close is 71 I think?).

They held it for 2018 because they didn't want Close to compete with Bening for Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. But then they dropped Bening's film in the December glut, and unfortunately the rest is history... The BAFTA nomination definitely signals that the potential was there had there been a better campaign. A summer release will allow time for word of mouth to grow, you know Close will work the campaign circuit, and historically, Best Actress is the kindest category to early releases.

I think she has a better shot with the musical version of Sunset Boulevard she's set to film.
