I consider it kind of a near-masterpiece... Animal Kingdom is a fine film, but I think Michod tops himself here. The whole thing is just shot through with tension from start to finish, despite its bare bones narrative and deliberate pacing. The lack of backstory for the characters somehow makes them even more interesting... I appreciate how they are almost like blank slates that we know very little about and we must fill in their history based on their actions and what little dialogue we are given. The screenplay is very sensitively written and it deals with its themes in an often poetic way without being heavyhanded.
It's a deceptively simple film that might seem derivative on the surface, but I think it has a lot to say about the effects of disillusionment and the value we place on other people and their actions. I remember one review nailing it by saying that the film is also about how man's destructive impulses will find him obliterating the very thing he's sought. It feels very much in the spirit of Cormac McCarthy and sort of plays like a stark fable.
I haven't seen Good Time yet, but I think this easily is the best performance I've seen Pattinson give... he's just terrific in it. This is probably my second favorite performance from Pearce (after Memento), who is just instantly compelling from the first few seconds he's on screen.
It's my #2 of 2014 (Foxcatcher is #1)

It's kind of like a lost John Hillcoat film. The Cake of Roth is pretty well on the mark with his write-up on it, although I still slightly prefer Animal Kingdom overall. I actually think it makes a fantastic double-feature with Mad Max: Fury Road.

A boring arthouse film with no character depth, but lots of cool Mad Max looking wasteland stuff. I love the aesthetic, not so much the film.

all I remember is that it was monumentally boring. I might've fallen asleep.
