It's either Timothée Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name or Laurie Metcalf in Lady Bird... I'll go with the former tonight.
How about you?

From what I've seen so far, Robert Pattinson in Good Time.

Day-Lewis who this year deserved all the plaudits he wrongly got for Lincoln (which I do like also but not at the Phantom Thread level)

Either Laurie Metcalf in Lady Bird or Cynthia Nixon in A Quiet Passion.

Steve Rose for The Guardian compared James McAvoy's ability to maneuver between the different personalities in Split to the special effects for the T-1000 in Terminator 2 and I think that's a pretty perfect description of that performance. He did such an incredible job detailing each personality that just observing how he aligned his body made it absolutely clear who he was in any given scene. And his ability to balance the different tones of the screenplay, from being legitimately menacing to humorous to sympathetic on the occasions where one of the personalities opens up about the difficulties of that particular condition both in terms of the symptoms and also the lack of proper mental health support for it. I have a ton of admiration for that performance.

Frances McDormand is head and shoulders above the rest. That's the only "best of the decade" worthy stuff I saw from 2017, at least in English language/nominated at oscars.

Pattinson in Good Time. I'd have never thought he could give a performance that good even just a year or two ago.

For movies - DDL in Phantom Thread. For TV - Three way tie between Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, and Eamon Farren in The Return.
