Love it. My favourite of the three PTA films I've seen, and one of my favourite films of all time.

I think it's a sweet film and the way PTA directed it is super well-thought-out, you can watch the film on mute and the staging and color alone can communicate the film's story. I have a lot of warm feelings towards it even if I don't think it's one of PTA's best, nor do I think of this like others do as the best evidence of Sandler's acting talent (I prefer his performances in The Wedding Singer, The Meyerowitz Stories, and Funny People).

There's a lot of little things to love about it - how his sisters all sort of created him by torturing him his whole life (funny and not), and some funny asides to stuff like Minnie & Moskowitz, the Cassavetes film I'm a big fan of.
I like how weird and quirky it is and I think it's a crucial film for him because all of a sudden he got quirkier, weirder and more idiosyncratic since then.
7.5-8.0/10

I think it's one of the greatest 'being inside a character's head' films ever made. It's like PTA opened a portal into Barry Egan and allowed us to come in. And I love how very cinematic aspect of it contributes to that very goal - the colors, the camera movement, the brilliant music and sound design. I adore it. It's also, I think, the first truly PTA film PTA's done in his career so that in itself is a great thing about it.

Best Superman film ever made.
Real talk, though, to quote what I said on another thread: Punch-Drunk Love was the one that took the longest time for me to appreciate. I'd seen it three times before it clicked with me. It's a brilliant homage to the works of Jacques Tati, with some Ophuls and Cassavetes thrown in for good measure. Not enough can be said about Sandler in it that hasn't been said before; the guy is capable of out-and-out brilliance if he gives a shit. Barry is the sort of character that can verge on unpleasant, but Sandler and Anderson set up an impressive high-wire act that he navigates with alacrity, keeping Barry from becoming a pathetic milquetoast. Watson is lovely, setting up wonderful chemistry with her leading man, and Hoffman damn near steals the show.

It's an interesting, unusual film with a nice cast, but I found it incredibly grating. The only PTA film I've seen that I don't like.

Doesn't rank among PTA's best for me but I do love it. Very heartfelt film.

Incredibly overhyped. It's PTA-lite. Sandler is very endearing and the screenplay has some zingers, but the story is so lightweight and underdeveloped that I barely noticed it. The romance doesn't work because Emily Watson is a one-trait character that exists solely for the purpose of falling in love with Adam Sandler. It all felt really hollow to me. The cinematography is gorgeous though.

One of PTA's more underrated films. It's a film that really grows on you. Sandler and Hoffman's performances are so good.

If I could physically hug a movie, this would probably be my choice.

The film has one of the strongest atmospheres within itself, which is hard for any filmmaker to create. From the cinematography, to the the art direction to the acting, this is a top notch film.
