Might be a bit of an unfair comparison, since I saw 45 Years a few years ago and am fresh off of Amour. I like both films quite a lot without loving either - they both get 8's from me. Somewhat surprisingly, I think I prefer 45 Years. Amour feels like a more precise, assured work that I may come to like more with reflection, but I also found it a bit too cold and austere. 45 Years could be slow going, but its peaks were high and incredibly powerful, especially that last scene.

45 Years is a good film but Amour is in the running for best of decade to me - it's the 3rd masterpiece by Haneke in less than 10 years.

I don't think they're in the same league. 45 Years leans so much on its stars to fill in the gaps and carry it all along. Haigh definitely does good work, and has moments of inspiration, but he's not operating on anything like the same level as Haneke.

between 45 Years and a two-hour advertisement for assisted suicide, I'll take 45 Years.

Top 5 is tough - but let's say Amour for it's great artistry and clarity of vision and A Separation and 3 Billboards, two films particularly about the way life is right now in this time would be fighting it out for number 1......Foxcatcher and Inside Llewyn Davis probably round out of the top 5 because they are particularly American films I think.....
