I really hope some of my most anticipated screen here because then there's a chance that they will come to Sydney the following month!

I've also read that Thomas Vintenberg's KURSK could be included in the lineup.

Speculation or not, this is all I really care about right now, or maybe the Von Trier one too.

Some brief observations/thoughts/speculations:
* Lars von Trier typically plays very well here. Even when he dropped the Hitler comparison, his film still took home a major prize. And he's usually got great luck with his leads (Bjork, Gainsbourg, Dunst). This is a good track record to have, as he puts his actresses through the wringer, so it'll be interesting to see if he does the same with Matt Dillon. If The House That Jack Built plays in comp, I'm penciling Dillon as the favorite here.
* Audiard is a favorite here as well, having won the Grand Prix for A Prophet and the big prize for Dheepan. I expect him to be a heavy challenger, especially as he's working off of strong source material. On paper, I'm getting "Best Screenplay" vibes.
* Vinterberg has won the Jury Prize before and directed Mads Mikkelsen to a Best Actor win, and he's got a sizable ensemble from which to draw from Kursk, but I suspect he'll be more of a Director contender.
* I feel like in the wake of the controversy surrounding the dearth of female filmmakers at previous festivals (and with Cate Blanchett heading this year's jury), we're going to see plenty of ladies in competition. Kusama, Kent, Kawase and Denis all seem like solid bets, but I expect at least half of them to bow in Un Certain Regard.
* First Man seems like the sort of thing they'd screen as an Opening Night premiere rather than a competition piece, but I suspect it'll miss at Cannes and make its bow in Venice the way La La Land did.

I'm really curious about Blanchett's choices, if she'll go at least a little bit Hollywood or if there'l be any surprises.

I don't think it's come up in the Variety or Screendaily mentions but Woody Allen's A Rainy Day in New York is getting some chatter too and of course Cannes has always been very welcoming and not averse to the uproar/publicity - not necessarily bad publicity either - see Jeff Wells post on Hollywood Elsewhere............maybe that's not likely but it's interesting as a possibility.
Not as an in-competition film necessarily but.........

Not as an in-competition film necessarily but......... Allen's films don't ever screen in competition. And even so, I don't think that Amazon would want the backlash against a public gala surrounding this film's release. I wouldn't be surprised if the film never does get a festival premiere or even a big opening show, instead being released on the sly.

I suppose so. I'm pleased whenever one of the Three Amigos puts out a film.

Didn't realized how strong this year could be until now. Denis, Audiard, Nemes, Farhadi, Leigh, Malick... Damn! I can see 2018 becoming my favorite year of this decade.
