It's amazing. It's brutal and astonishing, not to mention beautiful to watch. I'm not sure if DiCaprio deserved his Oscar, but it was one hell of a performance.

It's on Netflix LatAm and boy it does hold up pretty well.
Perhaps IƱarritu's best?

It's strong across the board. The cinematography was spectacular.
That said, DiCaprio didn't have any chemistry with his son. Their relationship felt really phoned-in.

I loved it when I saw it in theaters. Since then it's steadily declined in my mind with each viewing. I don't think it's as good as Birdman (nor any of Lubezki's recent collaborations with Malick and Cuaron), but there are still plenty of sequences within its overlong runtime that are absolutely riveting. Hardy is magnificent in it, DiCaprio is miscast. I do think the flashbacks and spiritual elements are quite pretentious. It seems like Inarritu mistook length with depth. This is a film that should've studied the No Country for Old Men and Gravity method of leanness. Inarritu wanted a giant epic when the material called for sparse, lean implacability. I also can't help but feel like between Birdman and The Revenant, Inarritu basically ripped off the style Cuaron/Lubezki developed in Children of Men. Only not quite as satisfying. Still a good movie, and I admire the crazy ambition of the project, but overall it doesn't resonate with me all that much. I'll take The New World any day.

Masterpiece. My #6 of the decade and one of the most beautifully shot films of all-time.

Still the most technically amazing movie of this decade, I think. The commitment to shooting on location (during awful weather conditions, no less), the breathtaking use of natural light, the fluidity of the camerawork especially during the action scenes, AGI and Chivo really just outdid themselves in every regard. I know some people find the story very boring and meandering, but I loved the slow, ominous burn. Despite the rather spiritual tone of the film, it felt really gritty and lived-in, creating a disturbingly realistic and hostile 1800s frontier setting. And of course DiCaprio is incredible, showcasing in every scene how talented and committed a performer he is.
It's imperfect, but I love it. Amongst my favorites of the decade.
