Mattsby - Are we going to leave out that she momentarily turned Glenn Close while they filmed Serving In Silence? (For which they both won Emmys!) Seriously, that's how good she is! “Oh, it was amazing. It changed me. It was like this Aha! moment. It was not intellectual—it was like a visceral feeling, being attracted, being in love with your own gender. It has informed me a lot. It was a good thing to go through.” - Glenn Close Oh wow. But have you seen Juliette Lewis giving Judy a mad back rub and kissing by the airport paperbacks in Gaudi Afternoon?? Btw have you seen any of The Starter Wife, her third Emmy win? That's like 16 episodes in all, and I can't find them anywhere!Sorry I missed your last question initially - yes, I have seen them all! My local library randomly has the DVD. Davis is her usual wonderful self, but it's nothing you haven't seen from her (and much better!) elsewhere. It's crazy that she won the Emmy over Toni Collette and Samantha Morton that year... But I totally understand wanting to be a completist in terms of her Emmy nominations/wins - I still need to see One Against the Wind and Dash and Lilly.

Happy Birthday to the great Christine Baranski! A major talent across all three mediums. With her wonderful performance on the new mega-hit show The Gilded Age, I did want to give Tony- and Emmy-winner Baranski a bigger spotlight. She is an incredible actress and just the most fabulous woman - I think she simply oozes charm and sophistication.

I finally watched the 70s miniseries Holocaust - marvelously acted across the board - but it made me want to highlight the gorgeously talented Rosemary Harris (an Honorary Tar Heel! ). Have any of you had the occasion to see her Emmy-winning performance as George Sand in Masterpiece Theatre's Notorious Woman? I really want to see it! I've just added her BAFTA-nominated performance in The Ploughman's Lunch (alongside another acting giant, Jonathan Pryce) to my watchlist, too - it's available on Amazon to rent for a nominal fee.

We've covered Sam Rockwell but never in-depth and he is, to me at least, the American actor buzzing around the Triple Crown more than anyone at the moment - partially because he already has the hardest award to win, the Oscar, and also because he's made big in-roads in the other 2 mediums. Rockwell won the TV SAG last night for Fosse/Verdon - he lost this years Emmy and Golden Globe - and he could have easily been nominated for his 3rd Oscar in a row for Richard Jewell in a weaker year too. In March he takes on one of the great modern American theater roles - Teach in a starry American Buffalo Broadway revival opposite Laurence Fishburne and Darren Criss . A role made famous by 2 US GOATs in the three mediums - Robert Duvall originally and later Al Pacino - they still tower over this part and over new actors attempting it. For Rockwell, it's a very big deal and a very big opportunity ........coming in the middle of quite a career run: I promise I won't get (too) annoying about Rockwell, but he finally got a Tony nomination. He's been pretty steady with his theater work lately and he's been covering some heavy hitters - Mamet, Shepard, Albee, he's even played Stanley Kowalski in a production back in Williamstown. One of the more disappointing things I've seen from some actors is a fear to try theatre, but Rockwell hasn't been backing down. He also isn't afraid to branch out into different genres (in film, theater, or tv). He's done comedy, drama, Shakespeare, sci-fi, westerns, action/adventure, crime, horror, rom-com, even voiceover. I can't recall a musical and his singing voice may be a mystery, but we do know the man can dance. After 10+ years of following his career, it's great to see him really flourish in seemingly every chance he gets.

Another actor I want to bring up is another favorite actor of mine - the underrated Cillian Murphy. Consistently excellent in both leading and supporting roles, with his next project being the lead in the upcoming Christopher Nolan film - a biopic nonetheless, which may be less Tenet and more Dunkirk in its award esteem and critical regard, but that is still sight unseen. His work in Peaky Blinders has been highly acclaimed since its start, although he's never received an Emmy nom. No Tony noms either, but he's also not afraid to do Theatre, with most of his work either sticking to Ireland or appearing at venues like St. Ann's Warehouse, which has had some of the most exciting theatrical works throughout recent years. I've unfortunately not seen him on stage, but he's worked with Enda Walsh, who is one of the most exciting playwrights today.

Two of the GOATs, for sure, having fun at a BAFTA party in 2019... loving Fiennes' pose.

Any Emmy thoughts?
Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield got their first noms. Altho their category I'd guess goes to Colin Firth in The Staircase? Which would put him in some company, living actors who've won Lead Oscar & Emmy for Movie/Mini : Pacino, Hoffman, Hopkins, Duvall, Rush.
Toni Collette got her 5th nom, 2nd this decade - Unbelievable, The Staircase - she's quite good in both and I'm not even a fan. Oscar/Tony nominee as well.... idk if she's been discussed?
Let's give it up for Walken, his 2nd Emmy nom, for Severance. He won't win tho.... That's a dangerous category this year.... three Succession dudes, two Squid Game, and Turturro who I think should win.
Biggest news, especially for this thread......... Marcia Gay Harden is looking at her Triple Crown?? Guest Actress for The Morning Show - was she good? The other nominees I've seen (the Succession gals) are sorta forgettable.

Jessica Lange Wiki - Reception and Acting Style"With regard to her acting style, Lange has said that she acts on "pure emotion" rather than relying on a specific technique. Director Glenn Jordan, who has directed her in O Pioneers! noted that "Jessica reminds me of what someone once said of Jack Lemmon. Whatever emotion or whatever small nuance you want, she is like a supermarket. Her shelves are stocked full and it’s all accessible to her". This sentiment was echoed by actress Sarah Paulson who, after working with Lange on the 2005 stage production of The Glass Menagerie as well as five seasons of American Horror Story, described the actress as being "like a cat on a wire" and added that "she is very instinctual, she doesn't come up with an entire plan on how to play a scene". As a result, Lange's performance style has positively been referred to as unpredictable, since she acts out the trajectory of her characters' emotional journey with unexpected turns." pacinoyes Javi

Some new Triple Crown candidates for 2023/2024/2025 Jeffrey Wright - who is an Oscar away from doing it and maybe gets his first nomination anyway this year........but more likely Kevin Kline for TV's Disclaimer (2024) and Mary Rylance for the last Wolf Hall (maybe 2024?) for the Emmy. Theoretically they may do it at the same awards show - or possibly (not likely) compete against each other in Best Actor depending how big Kline's role is.........and Wolf Hall's release......... An American and a Brit - each who would tie Pacino's record for a male with 5 TC wins (1 Oscar, 3 Tony's for Rylance & Kline each atm) .......it has been a very long time since a man has done this from the US or the UK.......also - arguably America and the UK's leading Shakespeare actors too btw.......

Ok, I'm going to be seeing this in April - and Jessica Lange will possibly be going for her 7th Triple Crown Award - the all-time record with Maggie Smith........I think she may be placed in Supporting - but I'm not sure........if she wins she'll be the 2nd female Tony / Oscar winner to have at least 2 of each......... Helen Hayes is the other I said before that no one rivals Streep but Lange in some ways does across mediums apart from just film.......I've seen her onstage and I'm pretty excited .......looks like my only show this year ......again - 1 show a season .......I use to see like ~ 7 or more .......
