Soooo...ummm...I guess it was okay? I hate starting off a positives comment with "visually stunning", but that's really the best thing it's got going for it. Well, Storm Reid is also a great lead, and she manages to outshine the more experienced performers in the film. That being said, the kid playing her little brother becomes too annoyingly precocious, and Reese is fucking irritating. Mindy is annoying too but I never liked her anyway and she's not THAT much of a nuisance here, but still not my cup of tea. And Oprah...well, it's Oprah...I dunno what else to say beyond that. But thankfully they disappear from the film after a while. It does at times feel like a "style over substance" type of picture. That and it sometimes shoves its whimsy and sappiness down your throat. Probably the most distracting thing is the sudden use of pop songs over certain scenes that just kinda feel like "what?" There's also an implied romance between Meg and Calvin that comes off less cute and more like one of those things that is hinted for the sake of being cute and is ultimately never resolved or even needed. I give it a 6 right now.

The only encouraging thing I've read about this is "Chris Pine is daddy" in one of the reactions

You're gonna be super disappointed Is he like a cameo or what? He's mainly in two quick scenes early on and the last 20 minutes or so (with maybe half the screentime of that)

I was planning on what I was hyping up as a David Oyelowo double feature with this and Gringo today. Saw this first, thinking it was interesting that they cast him as a character that's nothing more than underground tentacle arms of death or whatever, wondering if they'd change it up and let him look human and chew the hell out of the scenery before turning into the monster, but instead, it's just heavily-altered audio of his voice saying like three lines. Then afterwards, I was told by the dude at the box office that their print of Gringo wasn't working and hadn't been since last night. So my David Oyelowo double feature was just his voice saying three goddamn fucking lines. The end.

Hopefully at least one of them is better than this. Hell, I saw Strangers 2 today and walked out of that one feeling significantly more satisfied (though only because the killers actually die in this one...that redeemed the movie for the characters making more boneheaded moves than the ones in the first movie) .

Chris pine has cameo? Ugh... I mean, Chris Pine plays a character that goes missing like in the book. He's a plot device.... though I suppose that casting a big name actor like him in a small role can be quite a waste. Course, I also haven't last read the book in years since I was in middle school.

Well, there is still a good chance that I may end up seeing this around some point anyways. Maybe after I find time to go over the original book story and the 2003 TV movie again.

Overall found it to be a mix bag. Visually it was a gorgeous treat, but as an adaptation, I was slightly disappointed. I guess the biggest issue has to do with how hard it is to adapt the novel. You can go so many places with it.
Storm Reid was great though, I'll admit. Girl's gonna be (hopefully) going places.

Did Reese think acting like a stupid, pedophilic jerkass would somehow be funny?

i'm not going to financially support di$ney in any way but fwiw i asked david oyelowo in his AMA what he thought about dabbing and, although his opinion was negative, he was the only person who responded to that question in the dozens of AMAs i've tried to ask it in so props 2 him

I've heard it's worse than the last time Disney made it in 2003, and I don't even know how that could be possible.

I've heard it's worse than the last time Disney made it in 2003, and I don't even know how that could be possible. Definitely not as bad as the 2003 one, though you could probably chalk a lot of that up to it having the decency to be much shorter and having a budget larger than fifty cents.

I wanted to choke that kid.
Looked beautiful, but not a whole lot it could do to impress after Doctor Strange.
The length of this book seemed incredibly apparent, because the rush and exposition were all too overwhelming.
The performers tried, but there’s only so little life you can give to these people. It’s ironic that a movie about dimension would lack it.
Im not sure this book even feels adaptable. There’s clearly a lot of scope, but not enough time to dive into it, and this movie feels like it barely scratches the surface. But even if it were longer, can such material really hold up the momentum it would demand?
Sorry, Ava. I know you tried.
