This is part of RT's "Five Favorite Films" thing they do. He talks a little about each....
editorial.rottentomatoes.com/article/nicolas-cages-13-favorite-films/Here's the list for the lazy and unamused: The 400 Blows A Clockwork Orange Apocalypse Now Beauty and the Beast (’46) Citizen Kane East of Eden Enter the Dragon Juliet of the Spirits The Nutty Professor (’63) Once Upon a Time in the West Pinocchio The War of the Gargantuas The Wizard of Oz
Thoughts on his picks? Other RT actors favs? Your 13 fav films? You 13 fav Cage films? Have at it.

Enter The Dragon is the film that made me a movie fan so I'm always happy when somebody picks it, or any Bruce Lee film.
Wildly charismatic, tremendously appealing actor - there's never been anyone like him even among his imitators.

Like any older dude, his favorites are way old. Though, speaking personally, the only film from after 2006 that I have in my favorites list that made a significant cultural impact is The Wolf of Wall Street. I know what it is to be stuck in the past if I were born when he was born. His list covers a 40 year range though (1939-1979). That's a much more diverse list than some kid who only has movies from the past 10-20 years on his favorites list.

I know it's hip to pick on Cage, but the dude is not only insanely knowledgeable when it comes to films and performances (and who has remarkable taste), but I still maintain the man is the most talented American actor of his generation. You can keep your Penns and your Rourkes; I'll take Nic Cage any day of the week.
Now I'm picturing him in his Bad Lieutenant mode playing Captain Willard, and I want it.

I've made similar claims among my friends and I get the wildest reaction. And I'll hear 'he used to be great' etc etc....but in the last ten years he's got Bad Lieutenant, Joe, Army of One. He actually hasn't signed onto anything new since joinng WME last month, hoping for some career reshaping. In my head I've already casted him in a Western (he's obsessed with Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West) and a Nicholas Ray later-years biopic.

In my head I've already casted him in a Western (he's obsessed with Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West) and a Nicholas Ray later-years biopic. I've always said this: Nicolas Cage is enriched uranium in acting form. If you are a skilled enough physicist/director, you can use him to great advantage. Werner Herzog, Davids Lynch and Gordon Green, Mike Figgis, Spike Jonze, the Coens . . . they all knew this and he delivered in ways no other actor ever could. His biggest problem is the sheer prolific nature of his catalogue and the open secret that he is in dire financial straits, which means that he has to slum it more often than not. But here's the weird thing: I can count the number of times I've seen Nicolas Cage "phone it in" on one hand and still have a few fingers left. Even in the worst movies, Nicolas Cage goes for fucking broke. Even Gary Oldman has turned in a film or two where he can barely be arsed. If Cage cut his filmography by half, I guarantee you he'd garner a lot more respect. I definitely need a Cage-driven Western in my life, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.

All the typical choices. I do like those Enter the Dragon and War of the Gargantuas mentions though. Those seem like the kind of films that Cage would love.

I'm just glad he didn't pick an Elvis film.

Just finished The War of the Gargantuas. Special effects were excellent. I hope it gets a big budget remake some day. I have yet to see Juliet of the Spirits & The Nutty Professor.
