Haven't seen Fences and Loving and the only one I didn't care for was Shannon even if he wasn't bad by any means. Patel, who I abhor in Marigold movies was surprisingly good in Lion although it's Pawar who was its MVP. I liked/loved rest of them.

If we're talking about performances that wouldn't crack my top ten:
Affleck Huppert (though I do like how inspired her nomination is) Portman Streep Hedges Shannon Harris Williams

Andrew Garfield's and Dev Patel's are the only two nominated performances that I look at and think, "Really?"

Spencer for sure.
Bridges, Williams, Streep, Harris and Patel aren't anywhere near my personal favorites either.

It's tough to say who is and who isn't "deserving" but I will say that I don't nominate:
Ryan Gosling, La La Land (preferred his performance in The Nice Guys) Ruth Negga, Loving Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water (loved him in it, but Moonlight really swamped by BSA category and I also prefer Foster) Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals (preferred Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Shannon was reliably good, but he did far better work last year in 99 Homes) Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures (Monae was the standout, but I would have preferred Henson snuck in Best Actress than Spencer here)
Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) Natalie Portman (Jackie), Emma Stone (La La Land), and Denzel Washington (Fences) all make my top fives.
Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Nicole Kidman (Lion) Dev Patel (Lion), and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) fill out my Oscar-nominated Top 10s.
I found this year in general was a very strong year in the acting categories with little I could argue being an upsetting inclusion.
Other performances I nominate: Amy Adams (Arrival) *Top 5* Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train) Don Cheadle (Miles Ahead) Marion Cotillard (Allied) Kate Dickie (The Witch) *Top 5* Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) Sally Field (Hello, My Name Is Doris) *Top 5* Ralph Fiennes (A Bigger Splash) *Top 5* Andrew Garfield (Silence) *WIN* John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) *WIN* Jake Gyllenhaal (Demoliton) Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) Felicity Jones (A Monster Calls) Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures) Issey Ogata (Silence) Nate Parker (The Birth of a Nation) Jesse Plemmons (Other People) Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) Travante Rhodes (Moonlight) Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) *Top 5* Molly Shannon (Other People) *WIN* Kristen Stewart (Cafe Society) Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals) Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) Rachel Weisz (The Lobster) *Top 5* Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane)

Spencer!! Such a waste. Both Monae and Henson were better, and I still don't know what she did to warrant being in the awards conversation. The one scene with Dunst? That's the only memorable one and it was fine but not even close to enough to deserve a nomination. Shannon--terribly boring performance from a messy film to be nominating. He's done better, and he's even in my line up for Midnight Special but not NA. Garfield...not a fan of his work for Hacksaw whatsoever. I definitely wouldn't nominate Harris, as I found 80% of her performance bad but I do think her last scene was (very) emotionally impactful enough for me not to begrudge her nod. Bridges-meh. I love the movie so I don't mind, but Foster > Bridges.
I love all the rest of the nominees.
