Jane Campion reportedly wrote the character with Sigourney Weaver in mind, but Weaver turned her down as she was taking a break from film at the time.
Among the women Campion considered/spoke with about the role were...
Juliette Binoche Anjelica Huston Jennifer Jason Leigh Madeleine Stowe
Ultimately, the final choice was between Holly Hunter and Isabelle Huppert. It was supposedly Hunter's real-life piano playing abilities that won her the role. Huppert has stated later in interviews that she regrets not fighting for the part in the way that Hunter did, but part of her trepidation in really going for it was Campion's indecisiveness in who she wanted. "Sigourney Weaver and Anjelica Huston look quite different from Holly Hunter and me."
What do you think? Can you see any other actress besides Hunter in the role?

Binoche + Stowe + JJL + Huppert + Weaver = Huston = That being said , Hunter was born to play that role .

Michelle Pfeiffer, maybe? Interesting pick but it's a well-known fact that she doesn't do nudity.

I remember there was a body double for Monica Bellucci in Malena, because her booty wasn't chubby enough for the role, even in clothed scenes.

Hunter was great in that film, that I couldn't see anyone else in the role really.

This is one of my favorite performances of all time, so I couldn't even contemplate imagining anyone but Holly as Ada.

The character is Scottish so it would have to be rewritten for Huppert to play it as French, I assume? Hunter was absolutely fantastic in the part, we can all agree

Of all those actresses, Madeleine Stowe is the one I picture most as replacing Holly Hunter in the Ada role.

But I agree that making the character French wouldn't change much, textually. But then Paquin would have to be re-cast, too.

I wasn't aware Angelica Huston did nudity either. As for the others....I don't see JJL. Could see Stowe the best actually, though it could be argued she's not considered the talent any of those are. Binoche's naked body fits the part though-- if you look at her in The Unbearable Lightness of Being - her body was as pearly white as Hunter's; as is Stowe's for that matter. Huppert.... of course she's versatile in everything. A lot of actresses in that era could play Ada. But I see Stowe the best, actually. It'll be like what she played in The Last of the Mohicans except more innerness. And personally speaking, I like all of those actresses more than Hunter.
