the two movies of his i've seen are pretty much the same movie. softcore (or hardcore depending on your defs) porn, great aesthetics, psychedelic music, sick locales, short enough, lots of surreal imagery, and then some horror plot shoehorned in. very easy to watch stuff. anyone here a fan of him (or his french compadre, rollin)?

I haven't really been interested much in Franco or Rollin and I've only seen a few films from each but I kind of love Rollin's Fascination which I think is a pivotal film in horror and beyond - I mean it's pivotal even in pornography like the work of Andrew Blake even. First of all that film is absolutely ravishing to look at it - like Herzog did a horror film that year too (1979) and if you didn't know better you'd think Fascination was it on the surface and some of the images (if Herzog did a lesbian vampire film I mean ). In that film everything weird works from the vampire plot, to the setting, to its period (when is this madness taking place!), to its sexual subtext too. It is a movie that I think hit me in a way different from some other stuff of their work because I saw it when I was very young and saw its influence either intentional or not in a lot of stuff after. Like I don't think a lot of people know a film like Fascination even existed in its time - it is like finding something forbidden in that way - but it is frightening, silly, poorly acted and yet ........powerfully portrayed too and haunting to watch in a weird way - clearly it's trash, but it's a movie that gets to the heart of some uncomfortable stuff in the way that only trash can - the ending for one thing.

I think I saw Bloody Moon a while back (at least a decent portion of it), and I'm mildly interested in his other stuff. Dude was insane... he directed 20 movies in the span of two years.

Remember a guy on the Horror Board (best community on IMDB hands down) who had him as his favorite director. I saw A Virgin Among the Living Dead like five years ago but literally don't remember a single thing about it. He directed that one with Jean Rollin, who I have actually seen a decent amount from IIRC. The Grapes of Death, Living Dead Girl, Fascination, Zombie Lake, probably one or two others. Not too crazy about any of them, but Living Dead Girl is solid for this type of random/kinda shitty yet semi-endearing horror movie.
Out of curiosity, have you seen anything from Lucio Fulci?
