Thoughts? MVP?

Good play, bad adaptation. Three of the four main actors are just way too much, overplaying every single scene like they're selling it to the cheap seats. Only Amy Adams comes out of it with the slightest bit of dignity intact.

I love a lot of it, I think Fences last year was a very comparable piece as a filmed Broadway play - equal as plays and almost equal as films though Amy Adams lets Doubt down (I know most people don't agree).
The scene where she speaks to PSH (great here, as he often was) alone was a much tougher scene on stage and I think sort of lets him off the hook and doesn't work in favor of the piece overall - her wide-eyed innocent routine is laid on too thick - and PSH and Streep are, far better.
Streep a lot of people think is OTT but she's playing OTT quite specifically, her nun is a creation, that she portrays to have control over the students, the other nuns, the clergy ("the children fear you" she's told, "that's the POINT" she telling answers).
A very fine actors showcase otherwise, with Streep of course one of the greatest ever and PSH the greatest American actor to emerge since the 70s imo squaring off memorably.
7.5/10.

Not a perfect film, but it is very good at exposing the rationale behind many of the emotional and flawed actions of humans.

nd honestly, this was the start of my disdain towards Streep and the Academy. It's when I stood up and said, "if someone filmed this woman passing a hard stool, the Academy members would nominate it saying how smooth and relaxed her performance was in doing so".

I think the top half of my post got deleted by accident as I was typing. Didn't miss much, though because I just said "Blerg. (showing my disdain for the film) And honestly..." It's a new laptop with a new keyboard, still getting used to it.

I really enjoyed it when I saw it a couple years ago. All the acting was on point, but Streep was the clear MVP for me.

It's not very inventive in how it transitions the play to the screen, but I think the acting was really powerful from the four mains. Streep, Hoffman go big, Adams goes small, and Davis goes somewhere in the middle, and all of them are very successful in what they're trying to do. Streep is my MVP.

Good performances, but the movie is pretty full of itself. Not a big fan honestly.

I think it's one of the good play-based movies. It's dynamic and suspenseful enough, and very well-acted. Adams is the MVP.

It's a very good film and very well performed, but I would rave about it or anything.
