A new version of Mad World that I heard today on TV reminded me of this film.
I saw it shortly ater its release, when I was very young (in my pre-adolescent/early teenage years), and I remember finding it very strange and disturbing. I never saw it again ever since, even though some of its images stayed with me, as well as Gary Jules' haunting version of 'Mad World'.
I learned that, despite its failure at the box office, the film has gathered a faithful crowd of admirers and is now considered a 'cult film'.
What do you think about it?

It's a good film but I don't think it justifies multiple watches and I know people who've seen it a whole lot of times.......that isn't a put-down, films don't have to work over and over again after all and some of it is really spellbinding stuff too, but I think it a movie people want to be better than it is. It's not just a cult film .......it's more like a cult in general

I dug it and thought it was a clever little film . Put Jakey G on the map and come on , I wish Hollywood studios would give Richard Kelly another shot . Yes, I know Southland Tales & The Box were both clusterfucks but DD was aces.

Unfortunately the dudebros cinephiles have hijacked this movie. It's a real treat, some sort of Lynch-esque sci-fi that's very out there. It's super atmospheric and has its own voice, which I admire. I've seen mutiple times, but it's been a while I haven't seen it. The most intriguing aspect about it thought is how this movie is super well-written and well-done, and then the director went on to make a bunch of bombs.

I think it's great. Unfortunately it's kind of the poster child for the "I-like-'unique'-movies-but-this-is-as-far-into-the-slightly-unconventional-stuff-as-I'll-go, thanks" crowd.

Still holds up after all these years for me. Love the vibe of the movie and it's the perfect thing to watch when you're randomly awake at 3 am or something.
GOAT level soundtrack too.

Now I was never as hardcore as those fans who treated this film like their religion, but I do really like the film and every once in awhile I like to revisit it and I always enjoy it in all its weird glory. And that soundtrack is pure heaven for me. As much as I like the film, I have to say I like the soundtrack more. It's also hilarious to me. Maybe I'm just weird, but I laugh so hard at this every time for some reason. ^

I love the fact it was a modern film set in the 80's. It lets us reminisce of an older time. The story is so engaging, mysterious and full of little important details.

It's one of the very first movies that made me fall in love with movies so I have a soft spot for it. However, I do prefer Richard Kelly's next output, Southland Tales.
