Thank you all for submitting. The nominations will be announced tomorrow afternoon-ish. Thanks for arranging. I know some seem disappointed with the number of ballots, but I think anything in the 30 - 40 region is going to be about max turnout for these things. I'll be impressed if the 2017 hits the 40 - 50 region.

Fences has a pretty great perf from Washington (best of the Oscar nominees imo), but the movie itself doesn't use the medium of film very well -- the long monologues and emphatic speeches work on stage because you're communicating to an audience, but on film you're communicating to a screen, and different techniques must be used. Washington is the only one that really seemed to understand this. Lion is fine, it's fine, it's perfectly fine. Unremarkable in every way. I guess there were good performances, but the story was cookie-cutter predictable Weinsteining, if you know what I mean. This is my thing with Lion...I'm expecting exactly what you describe, and other than Kidman being in it, I really just don't care. I feel like I'll watch both of these at some point, but not by the middle of next week. Lion is anything but unremarkable. Don't listen to what Martin says. See the film and judge for yourself. And if (as you said) cinematography is your favorite category, you should definitely give it a try. There are other great things about the film, but cinematography is perhaps the best.
