If I have one complaint about it, and I do only have one complaint about it; it's that it overuses closeups. It just has too damn many of them, keeps it from a 10/10. Other than that I have nothing but love. Hopkins is supporting. Foster is better. Brooke Smith is super underrated. Ted Levine is the killer!

Oh, I'll definitely concede that they have there place in the film, but I do insist they were overused. I find the scene with Foster and Kasi Lemmons discussing Lector's notes on the case particularly sets my teeth on edge, and not in a cool 'Oh, this is such a masterwork of tension that it's setting my teeth on edge' way, it's in a more 'I wanna slap Jonathan Demme and Craig McKay' feeling.

It's a well-made movie from a very good team in front of and behind the camera, but I find it a bit too cold and mechanical to be an absolute favorite. Thinking about it's Oscar wins always amazes me though.

The storyline is engaging, ably mixing the criminal investigation strands with scenes involving the killers themselves.

I watch it every year or two and every time, I come away shocked at how perfectly made it is. It has no errors in the narrative or in any of the technical aspects and in what it conveys (and how) to the audience. It is shocking because Demme used to make great and messy films (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild) and he is the most docile and gentle man, you wouldn't suspect him for this.
But it's just a perfect storm of source material, screenplay, cast and director and the result is a pop culture marvel - a woman's picture, a FBI procedural, a serial killer film, a psychological piece and all those elements mesh seamlessly. It's not my fave movie of 1991 but there's no better made film than that - one of the best made film of it's era actually.

WTF Makes perfect sense. I watch Mean Girls every year but it's in no way my favourite film of 2004.

Near Masterpiece, one of the best of the 90s decade
My Best of 90s would be Heat/Unforgiven - Both Masterpieces imo, Fargo is right up there with Silence of the lambs and a few others

Cassavetes' Opening Night kind of replaced it as my favorite film, but it's still up there. This is how to make a crime thriller that's involving and smart without lacking heart. The performances are all flawless and just lift the quality higher. I love Demme's choice to use so many close-ups, although it certainly helped that Foster is so great at carrying them off and she's the lead. One of those times where everything just worked (well, with the exception of that shot of Kasi Lemmons running).

I watched that relatively recently after a good long time, and it holds up like a motherfucker. Maybe even more tellingly it's one of the few movie adaptations I have seen that continues to hold up after you have read the book. It is one of the great, great adaptations that gets right into the heart and mind of its central character without cheap use of voiceover (okay, they have all the monologuing, conversational scenes with Hannibal, but they're played so well they get a pass) and the whole thing is just slick as fuck. It's a great character piece, and an even greater feat of filmmaking.

Acting-wise, it's impeccable. Not a false note or step put anywhere. Even the minor characters are played to the bloody hilt. (Still, though, can't ever watch Kasi Lemmons thundering down the hallway and not crack a smile.)
Directing-wise, same. Masterful uses of close-ups and the Buffalo Bill stuff has such a great voyeuristic feel to it. Plus the escape sequence might be some of the best direction the 1990s ever gave us.
Overall, it's a tight and taut package. Some of it is insanely dated (Foster's hair), but it still holds up extremely well. The pen thing still bothers me, but I tend to believe Barney did it.

It's just the fashion of the time always sticks out to me. It's not the film's fault, but Jesus Christ, it painfully dates itself just because of that, and it doesn't help that you have other Hopkins-led films in the franchise that don't. Again, not Demme's fault that those films came later, but it still makes me cringe that people ever thought those suits and hairstyles would endure.
