Ben Platt, Barbra Streisand, Gwyneth Paltrow to Star in Ryan Murphy Netflix Series 'The Politician'
The hourlong comedy landed at the streaming giant with a two-season, straight-to-series order.
Netflix has nabbed its second star-studded show from Ryan Murphy.
Following a weeklong bidding war, the streaming giant has handed out a two-season, straight-to-series order for The Politician, starring Tony winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen). Barbra Streisand and Gwyneth Paltrow are in talks to co-star in the hourlong comedy from Glee co-creators Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. This marks Murphy and Falchuk's second show at Netflix and joins One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel Ratched, starring Sarah Paulson.
The Politician revolves around Platt's Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbara resident. Each season will center on a different political race that the character is involved in. Platt is expected to have musical numbers in the show. Production is expected to start in late summer.
The package, which also drew interest from Hulu and Amazon, is produced by Fox 21 TV Studios and stems from Murphy's overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Dana Walden, who co-runs the studio, guided the package.
This is Paltrow's latest collaboration with Murphy and Falchuk. The actress, who is engaged to Falchuk, won an Emmy for her guest turn on Glee. She also was working with Murphy to prep a TV version of One Hit Wonders, the project they had at one time set up as a feature film.
The Politician joins a roster of Murphy's scripted originals that also includes Fox's recently renewed drama 911, FX anthologies American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Feud, plus ongoing drama Pose and Netflix's Ratched.
The Netflix deal comes as Murphy's overall deal with 20th TV is set to expire this summer, with industry chatter that the prolific producer could either strike out on his own or ink a deal with a streaming giant. He is not expected to remain at 20th TV, which is among the assets to be included in Fox's $52 billion sale to Disney, which awaits regulatory approval.www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/ben-platt-star-ryan-murphy-netflix-drama-politician-1081705
