Immediate thoughts: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GO FUCK YOURSELF XAVIER YOU SLIMY LITTLE HACK FUCK I HOPE YOUR RAZOR'S STILL SHARP AFTER IT'S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD BECAUSE YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A LOT OF SHAVING TO DO AFTER THIS TRAINWRECK GETS TROUNCED
Thoughts after calming down and thinking about this a little more rationally: yeah, I'm mixed on this. Dolan certainly needs more restraint in the editing room, because two of the three films I've seen from him would benefit from having 30-40 minutes' worth of fat axed off, so it's a good sign that he's willing to kill his darlings for a change. But on the other hand, it's not like Chastain was on set for two or three days for this like she was for To the Wonder; hers was supposed to be one of the central characters, one that's intimately connected to what Dolan has so far put forth as the film's main theme. For him to be reworking things this dramatically 9 months into post and arriving at a 4-hour first cut is... not too promising. And it's not like his last film was anything to write home about, so...

One fewer reason to watch it, then.

Shocking news, especially considering that they're friends in real life. Friends don't just Adrien Brody other friends! Zeb31 - Do you recommend Juste la fin du monde at all? It didn't get any kind of release in the US...

It didn't get any kind of release in the US... I'll copy + paste what I posted here about it months ago, immediately after I saw it: So long story short: it's not all bad and the cast do try their best, but it feels completely pointless and without anything concrete to say. It's like watching the first 30 minutes of a 2-hour film. Laurence Anyways goes from A to B to C to D to E when it could've called it a day at D and been better off for it. It's a good thing it's so compelling throughout; then the lack of economy is easier to forgive. Mommy goes from A to B to B to B to B. I'd appreciate the 100, 110-minute version of this as much as everyone else seemed to love the 140-minute one. It's Only the End of the World... is 90 minutes of A. With a couple music videos spliced in for the sake of good aesthetics. Which is a pity, because with a cast and a premise like those, I was really looking forward to it back in 2015-2016. I was actually as excited for that as I was for John F. Donovan up until a few minutes ago, so if history repeats itself...

I'm a big fan of Mommy and I'm fond of I Killed My Mother, but all his movies are pretty much the same (besides JTEOTW, which isn't really about anything?), so this one seemed very interesting 'cause it had a very different subject. But now Dolan had the brilliant idea to chop it into... another mother-and-son story. Groundbreaking. Just put a fork in my eyes already.

Whoa, I literally gasped when I saw this headline. It always seemed that Chastain was the second lead.

It's supposed to be about a closeted millennial actor dealing with the fallout from being publicly outed by the press, and this is what his mother looks like: Privileged artsy millennial male lead, check. LGBT identity as a central plot point, check. Extravagantly coiffed, presumably shrieking mother, check. No father figures anywhere, check. Hmm. This being focused on the media and celebrity culture (a.k.a. the Chastain storyline) seemed like a welcome break from all this, but I guess instead we'll get to see Sarandon scream a lot.

I wonder if this has to do with the nature of the character. With the current atmosphere in Hollywood and even beyond it, I bet he chickened out on having a gossip columnist who destroys an actor through revealing personal info about him in his flick. I can even imagine Chastain asking him to remove her because she's such a fighter for all the woke causes in HW, and here she would be playing someone who falsely annihilates someone's career. I dunno, this situation is way too weird for me to just believe that Dolan happen to decide that his hyped deviation into something more ambitious is gonna suddenly become yet another mother-son shouting match.

That actually makes perfect sense. And it's a chicken shit move if true.

That’s too bad. I was really excited to see her as an antagonist again after Crimson Peak. I guess we’ll have to take Dolan’s word that it’s for the best for the narrative, but I hope her scenes will be released someday.

Good, Chastain's filmography will not be tarnished by this messy film Yeah, because her filmography is currently front-loaded with winners.
