So, I just re-watched The Devil Wears Prada for the first time in, I don't know, six years? I'm truly impressed by how little screentime Streep has in the film, and yet she got a Lead Actress nod despite this obviously being Hathaway's movie. Miranda is a nice character, but she's kind of a glorified plot-device to make Andy grow up or something, right? I actually believe Blunt is more of a presence in the plot than Streep, screentime-wise. Do you people also have Streep as supporting or is my judgement just bad?

HATHAWAY : LEAD STREEP + BLUNT : SUPPORTING That's right, gurl. It's just bizarre to think of someone category-frauding... but a supporting performance in lead category, right?

Hathaway is lead, Streep and Blunt are supporting. Streep's nominations are almost always guaranteed, so they probably thought it's better to push her in lead as it'd help Blunt's chances in supporting.

It's Anne's story for sure but Meryl was clearly the bigger name of the movie and her Miranda Priestley was the central character that everyone else spins around. That being said , her role was more in service of Anne Hathaway's story , so yeah definitely supporting for me .

Hathaway is lead and Streep is supporting. Streep's quality supporting performance just bulldozed right over her lead one in that corny movie, that's all.

She's supporting. It's a Hannibal Lecter-type case where a performance with less screentime leaves such a mark it hovers above the entire film and makes as big an impact as the lead one does.
Not that I think Streep's performance in this is on par with Hopkins's, just an apt comparison.

Supporting. It's Hathaway's story, told from her perspective.

She makes a MUCH bigger impact than Hathaway. In the Silence of the Lambs, the performances are more on the same level.

Supporting, but Streep got top billing and thus was nominated in the leading actress category per the academy.

She's supporting. You put a nobody in that role, and nobody would question it.
