Definitely the year of the British invasion.
I'll go:
1. Helena Bonham Carter, The Wings of the Dove (one of the all time great performances IMO)
2. Julie Christie, Afterglow 3. Judi Dench, Mrs. Brown 4. Kate Winslet, Titanic
5. Helen Hunt, As Good as It Gets
-----
My personal lineup would look something like:
Helena Bonham Carter, The Wings of the Dove Julie Christie, Afterglow Judi Dench, Mrs. Brown Pam Grier, Jackie Brown Julia Roberts, My Best Friend's Wedding

1) Christie, and she was the snub one, by toooo faaar the best actress of 1997 year. Her perfomance wasn't as acclaimed because she wasn't Oscar or SAG nominated, but she win most of critical awards including NYork Critics and San Sebastian (the 4th most important European Festival). Absolutely perfect the performance of her lifetime, a former Brittish scream Queen, who have an affair with a younger journalist, when she remembers the lost of her child with her former husband.-
2) Bonham Carter, she was a well known, but still not big star, at 31 she delivered the performance that elevated from a promising starlet to a star in her own. Her final scene, when she loose her virginity and afterthat is sublime.
3) Judy Dench. was just an OK Perfomance, she was later better. Judi Dench was a famous stage actress, and well know in TV and Films, mostly in supporting roles. This film become her film debut as a STAR
4 and 5. I'm not decided. At that time I consider better Winslet, but 25 years ago, I think that maybe Hunt was better. I'm undicised. I don't think Hunt deserves the Oscar because Christie and Bonham Carter where a million times better, and both have a more interesting film career. I mean when 5 performance are very different, maybe is the career what's matter. And Christie and Bonham Carter had a respectable film career. While Hunt have a couple of good roles, but mostly her parts were supporting. She was more famous for her TV sitcom. Winslet career was just started and with 3 or 4 years career maybe was too soon for an Oscar.
So I guess, that maybe Winslet or Hunt could be replaced by Pam Grier. Mostly Hunt, because at least Winslet was in Gone with The Iceberg. But Di Caprio who was much better was snub. So maybe Hunt was a slightly better. I hate Hunt won, because I consider her more a TV star, that needs at least 2 Oscar nominations for a win. But now, I don't know. Winslet in Titanic, wasn't her best performance.-
Today unfortunately TV rules, and for example Alisson Janney won an Oscar more for her TV work, than for her performance or even her film career that was supporting but interesting film career (American Beauty).-
