It’s been ten years since I first saw it. I loved it the first time I did and I still really like it. Possibly the only good film of its genre and one of the best films of 2008/Decade.
The initial impact from the trailer attached to the Transformers screening still resonates to me a lot. Rarely has any other film tried to build up hype in an understated yet haunting marketing campaign.
As for the actual film, a raw experience that elevates audience expectations to the urgency felt on possibly this century’s most traumatic event. Nothing ever has one wrong note sans a couple of performances. From the sound mixing to the clubby, organic editing. While it may not have satisfied the lore and the build up generated by its cult following, Cloverfield still manages to stand as a herculean story on its own. It is the modern day Godzilla, as in trying to look back at the darkest hours of a society, relive its impact and make it analogous to a monster invasion. The Host tried to replicate the original Godzilla but its cheesiness makes it near impossible to appreciate the message it aimed for. It is in Cloverfield authentic, grim mid 00’s setting that makes it amiable to its audience. Cloverfield came out at a time where Internet was booming. The iPhone was introduced and America was about to enter in its worst financial crisis in ages. The sense of apocalypse was dilatory yet justified as the film industry had just begun to unravel America’s post 9/11 anxieties as well as the ones from the recession to come.

I thought it was surprisingly awesome last time I saw it in early 2016. Great action, great tension. I thought it worked.

Incredibly flawed. Shoddy acting and a love story shoehorned in take away from a really great premise.

I'm on board with you, Archie. I don't love it as much (and some of those performances are painful), but there is much to admire in this tale of people finding courage in a terrifying situation.

I remember the marketing campaign for this shit and was intrigued by it. Saw it opening night with some friends and overall we all dug it (although I can completely understand how it could give someone a headache with all the shaky cam shots). These found footage films can be so hit or miss. I think Cloverfield was one of the better ones though tbh.
7/10

That damn monster (and the little spider things that fall off it) will forever haunt my dreams.

Much better than a movie seen through the eyes of T.J. Miller has a right to be.

If you ever want to show off your surround sound system, pop in the Blu-Ray copy of this film. Absolutely stunning.
Watched it when it first came out and to this day it still remains one of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had.

I'm not a fan of the genre but I thought it was fun. And Lizzy Caplan is gorgeous as ever.

I loved it. One of my favorites of that year. Then it was extremely inspired and indeed scary at times. It still works today and really created a new genre somehow. Also the technical achievement was great.
