Unexpected? I think the first movie I remember him in was young Frankenstein... Not much successful comic work from Gene besides that and come on, that's just a cameo anyway ............. I mean I love it but Heartbreakers, Get Shorty, Birdcage, Royal Tenebaums were clearly unexpected. What I mean is that was the first thing I saw from him back in the 70s (you know I'm ancient), so I associated him with comedy from the beginning. 🙂

I think so too - but again nobody saw that shift towards comedy coming like it did later not saying he never did comedy but it wasn't a featured part of his resume........he's actually the guy that I argue Denzel Washigton should look at right now if he wants to get some hit comedies under his belt. You can do it after 65 .....it's possible..........Gene did it..

Happy birthday, legend. Was fucking tragic the other year watching The Mule in which he briefly features as an extra and is basically fucking unrecognizable. Time is truly a massive cunt. I had no idea he was in that film. I feel like Jeff Bridges is the closest thing we have to him, though Jeff is awesome in his own right.

Happy Birthday to a Film's Giant. I have been re-watching a lot of movies of my girl Gena Rowlands lately, love both of them in Another Woman, Gene is so good in it, he makes the absolute most of each of his scenes.

A legend who got out while the gettin' was good, though if he'd retired just three years earlier on The Royal Tenenbaums, that would've rated as one of the greatest swan songs of all time.
Here's to another ninety, Clean Gene.

Happy birthday to of the best film actors ever! If there is a retired or inactive movie star I miss seeing the most, it's this effortless legend. But he left a complete body of work on celluloid, so here's hoping he continues to enjoy a well earned retirement, and makes it well past his 100th birthday

One of the greats - 6th on The pacinoyes List of Great America Actors (trademarked) right behind Brando & The Big 4 (amen)...... Prime Cut is a fascinating, partially successful movie with a very interesting performance

Still missed on the screen. They have actually been screening The Conversation this week and Kenneth Turan and Michael Phillips have reviewed the movie again. His Night Moves performance is a masterclass as well.

Still missed on the screen. They have actually been screening The Conversation this week and Kenneth Turan and Michael Phillips have reviewed the movie again. His Night Moves performance is a masterclass as well. What's so great about Hackman in Night Moves - and you can only really gain this on re-watches - is just how much Harry Moseby is placed into repeatable situations that he just "misses" and that he messes up - someone dies, or is hurt, or is connected to someone they shouldn't be etc. - through no fault of his own but that he couldn't actually have prevented either as the movie plays out. Night Moves is like The Long Goodbye where if you've only seen it once - I don't think you can pull everything out of it that is special. There's almost not a single moment in that film where Harry is not lied to, or misled or somebody always leaves out a crucial piece of info in what they tell him ........ That's really tough to play - and not want to appear one step behind - since the audience THINKS they're ahead of Harry - but of course we are not - it's unlike any private eye in the genre actually. Demands rewatches definitely.......
