An absolute boss, capable of playing rough 'n' tumble heroes and terrifying villains alike. I don't begrudge Clean Gene's retirement, as he seems to be enjoying it, but we need a man like Mr. Hackman in the movies again.

Oh yes , for sure !Still, I definitely wouldn't mind him to give us at least one more performance .

Best American actor of all time. Would have loved to have seen him work with the directors of today.

Happy birthday to a great actor. Night Moves is probably his most underrated film, and highly recommended.

Here's to the top dog of his generation. Wish he were still kickin' ass on the big screen instead of just fighting bums who harass his wife, but I just hope he's digging the hell out of his retirement.

Happy to see he still has a few years left before he saves his family from a sinking battleship.

One of the greatest actors ever, actually in my Top 5. It's really sad for us film fans he quit on acting already 15 years ago. But I guess it was the right decision for him and he didn't seem to miss it otherwise he could easily have had a comeback.

Real pity he decided to retire at the age of (just) 73. He had so much more to give.
God bless him.

Happy birthday to my favorite actor and he is truely missed on the screen. I give him wins for Scarecrow, Unforgiven and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Happy Birthday to a Great American actor and distinctive of the country in many ways in the characters he played and how he played them. Once you get past the big 5 American film actors imo: Brando, Nicholson, DeNiro, Pacino, Hoffman (67-88) you can start entertaining arguments for Mean Gene as being right behind that group (with Newman and Lemmon) - and many people prefer him even. Also, in the last few years of his career he showed a great, unexpected and wild comic streak........"Did you just call me Coltrane"

Happy birthday, legend. Was fucking tragic the other year watching The Mule in which he briefly features as an extra and is basically fucking unrecognizable. Time is truly a massive cunt.

I think the first movie I remember him in was young Frankenstein... Not much successful comic work from Gene besides that and come on, that's just a cameo anyway ............. I mean I love it but Heartbreakers, Get Shorty, Birdcage, Royal Tenebaums were clearly unexpected.
