Tender Mercies 1.03b.
Besides The Weary Kind and Bridges' performance, it's really not very good.

Not watched it since it came out, but I thought it was amazing. In fact it's tragic to me how (and I've not seen Hostiles yet) basically everything Cooper has done since has gotten worse and worse lacking all of the intricacy of characterization, the counter intuitive performances, the way the songs were weaved into the development, etc. that made this thing so special. Out of the Furnace and Black Mass by comparison were hollow shells, full of outward posturing but with none of the... CRAZY HEART! It took this told a million times before story, and made it special on account of the attention to detail.

I hated it at the time, I don't think I want to see it ever again, it would be a nice entry to that lame tv show Silvia Pinal hosted for so long, that bad I think it is. And Maggie Gyllenhaal was awful, no chemistry, no conviction, why her character would like to hangout with Bad blake and is a big mystery.

I am much kinder on Out of the Furnace and especially Black Mass than you are, but I think you're right on the money about Crazy Heart. Tender, beautiful, and Bridges/Gyllenhaal are so wonderful in it together and really bring out the best in each other. Will never understand why people shit on Maggie's performance; she's far and away the only non-Mo'Nique nominee who deserved to be there that year. And "The Weary Kind" is the best Oscar-winning song in, like, 25 years.

It's really quite good. I like all of Cooper's films just about equally. Wait, people shit on Gyllenhaal's performance!?!?!? She's my win for the year

It's really quite good, Hostiles is the only Cooper I like better. Wait, people shit on Gyllenhaal's performance!?!?!? She's my win for the year She wasn't at all respected for this performance on the old board. But that place was enamored with Up in the Air for some reason. Glad to see that trend has died.

Glad to see that trend has died. i do like Up in the Air my fair share, but people weren't saying Vera and Kendrick were better because that's borderline blasphemous even amongst a subjective topic Hopefully you aren't too upset I didn't directly quote you 😜😂

Really liked this film, Scott Cooper's best so far, easily. You can never go wrong with T-Bone Burnett. And Jeff Bridges is fantastic in the film, a strangely underrated performance (since he won an Oscar for it...weird)

It is quite disappointing that it could easily have been so much more with just a bit more effort on the story and/or character development.

I dig it (granted, I haven't seen it since it was first released but I was glad Bridges won the Oscar for it). Cooper gets a lot out of his actors/actresses.

Brilliant performances from both Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal . The story itself is quite predictable but still beautifully told. ps : I still think Colin Firth should have won the oscar that year
