I think there are wonderful moments but all comes down to buy the "fantastical" element surrounding it and to me that was the problem, the shifts were a bit too abrupt and I felt take off part of the central drama, but is very well acted, Hounsou's character could've been a caricature but he's great and Morton too, the moment when the whole family is at the fair and the father waste all the money Morton's face says it all.

Good performances, Considine, Sarah Bolger, but I thought the whole thing was kind of hokey.

I remember liking it, but I was kind of caught in the Lost in Translation hype during the year, and by the time this movie came around, I thought any other movie about being lost in a city as a theme is a pale 2nd version/billing.
This really broke Considine out, and he was the most celebrated young British actor for 8 years. And Morton easily destroyed the lame other nominees... Theron and Watts included. And that was a notoriously weak year for the nominees.
It's not a bad movie at all. It's non-setimental and isn't really as lame like your average rom com or something. It's a mild film, but it's not really formulaic at all.

A film where you can really feel for the characters. Well acted all around. The two young girls were excellent. Real people and real situations.

One of the best movies of 2003 ! Great cast (Sarah Bolger should have received an oscar nod as well) + directing + writing . 9/10
