DGA 1. Guillermo Del Toro - Tied with Gerwig for the most critics circle best director trophies, won the Critics Choice and Globes, and nominated at the BAFTAs
2. Christopher Nolan - Won the third most critics circle best director trophies, and nominated at the BAFTAs.
3. Martin McDonaugh - Not nominated at the Oscars, BUT the DGA winner goes on to win Best Picture 77% of the time. It also has a BAFTA nomination
4. Greta Gerwig - Tied with Del Toro for the most critics circle best director trophies. No BAFTA nomination.
5. Jordan Peele - No BAFTA nomination.
My view here: Del Toro is the HEAVY FAVORITE to win. But Nolan and McDonaugh are the wildcards.
WGA ADAPTED
1. Call Me By Your Name - Won the Critics Choice Best Adapted Screenplay award. Won the most critics circle screenplay awards for this category. Film is nominated for Best Picture.
2. The Disaster Artist - Won the second most critics circle awards for this category.
3. Molly's Game - Nominated at the BAFTAs and WGAs.
4. Mudbound - Nominated at the WGA and won two critics circle awards.
5. Logan - Same as Mudbound, only it's a superhero film.
WGA ORIGINAL
1. Get Out - Won the most critics circle screenplay awards and the Critics Choice Best Original Screenplay.
2. Lady Bird - Won the second most critics circle awards.
3. Shape Of Water - Best Picture front-runner.
4. The Big Sick - Nominated at the Oscars.
5. I, Tonya - No Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
My view: Get Out and CMBYN will win here. However, I think Lady Bird and TSOW are really strong alternatives here.

Unlike the Oscars, the DGA likes him (it's his fourth nomination), it's the biggest visual/technical accomplishment of the nominees (and those more often than not win), and it's a movie that's conventional enough to get the votes of the traditionalist crowd, but at the same time it is different enough from the usual war movie (it's structure, and also the fact it's not about brave heroes trying to win the war, but ordinary men just trying to survive) to get at least some votes from the people that prefer a more unusual type of film.

Oscars don't like him? How? They DID nominate him for Best Director. Just because someone failed to make the top 5, doesn't mean Hollywood Elite's doesn't like that person. Nolan is an Oscar voter right? To get into the Oscars, you need to either win an Oscar or get approved by the Oscar committee. However, I DO agree for the rest of your thought process. Dunkirk is a "director's movie". It's about the ensemble cast of character. Its got the visuals. Its got the great film editing. Its got a great score and sound design system. But I am still going with TSOW. Del Toro's direction is the most celebrated out of the nominees AND it won the PGA.

And while one time, it was a tough competition (Memento), in the other two it was very clearly a snub, specially considering he was the only director of the DGA line-up missing.
