What is this year's "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk"? I'd say Downsizing. I thought it was gonna be a major player given Payne's track record. HMs to Wonder Wheel and Suburbicon.

Wonderstruck. Some people were convinced that was the big winner going into Cannes.

Wonderstruck. Some people were convinced that was the big winner going into Cannes. Nice shout, I completely forgot about that film's buzz.

Here's a personal one: I thought this time last year that Woody Harrelson would be a major threat to win . . . for The Glass Castle.

Thank You for Your Service, especially considering how successful American sniper was. But it bombed hard and was forgotten about really quickly.
Film stars don’t die in Liverpool. It definitely seems like annette wants that Oscar, but another movie that cake and went pretty fast. At least she got a Bafta nod.
LBJ- I once thought that Woody was going to be an oscar contender for this film. Then it came out.
Last Flag flying- After Boyhood’s success, I had suspected that this would have had a similar impact.
Hostiles- I remember it being a big deal when Hostiles was given a limited release in December because it seemed like Bale could be an Oscar contender.
Stronger- I definitely thought Gyllenhaal had a shot here.

Wonderstruck. Some people were convinced that was the big winner going into Cannes. Yeah, I still think it's hilarious that some people were so confident it was going to be the next The Artist or Hugo, only for it to be completely ignored. The source material never struck me (ha) as something that would translate into a critically acclaimed film.

Wonderstruck. Some people were convinced that was the big winner going into Cannes. Eh, at least that played well at Cannes and got strong reviews. Downsizing's unprecedented rollercoaster buzz throughout the year culminating in a downward spiral towards critical, financial and awards disappointment has to give it the edge here. With that said, though, I never would've thought that out of the four "Wonder" movies this year, the Julia Roberts one based on teen literature from the director of Perks of Being a Wallflower would be the only one to end up an Oscar nominee.

Wonderstruck was poised to win BP back in Cannes and got nowhere, but it got good reviews, so I think it's unfair. Downsizing qualifies the most.

Last Flag flying- After Boyhood’s success, I had suspected that this would have had a similar impact. If it hadn't been screwed over by a borderline nonexistent release, it probably would have had a decent shot at some noms. It's a shame.

No contest, the answer is Wonderstruck. It won the best picture poll at least twice.

Hostiles reminded me of Wyatt Earp it was well produced, but an unlikable story with people that are hard to root for.
Are people already predicting Bale to sweep for the Dick Cheney biopic?

Agree - based on the director's past record with AMPAS, it has to be Downsizing.

I never got a chance to see it due to it’s borderline nonexistent release. What noms would you have liked to have seen from it?

If it's from the beginning of the year buzz then probably Downsizing, but it's from inception of Project than it is Tulip Fever hands down. But we knew pretty quickly after it was cut that it was bad

Downsizing is a disappointment because it's Payne but I don't think it won our monthly polls.

Carell is incredible, though I'm curious where they would have placed him. Also should have been sitting comfortably in the weak-ass Adapted Screenplay category.

I expected Stone and Carrell to be contenders for Battle of the Sexes early on. Gyllenhaal for Stronger too (which he deserved).
