No film has won Best Picture without a SAGE nomination since Braveheart in 1995.
Birdman won best picture in 2015, despite lacking a best film editing nod. Normally films win best picture with a director, screenplay, and editing nomination.
When we look at the Best Picture nominees, we see that:
The Shape of Water scored director, screenplay, and editing.
Three Billboards scored screenplay and editing.
Get Out and Lady Bird scored director and screenplay.
Dunkirk did director and editing, and didn't even get a screenplay nod at the WGA awards, even though it was eligible.
Everybody else is out. CMBYN doesn't director and editing. The Post and Darkest Hour doesn't have director, screenplay, or editing nomination. The Phantom Thread has no screenplay and editing nomination.
Which one has the best shot?

I actually think it's going to be Lady Bird.

The last time a film won best picture without being nominated for director, screenplay, and editing was Birdman in 2014. . . . Huh? Either way, a trend is being broken this year, because every film nominated will break a trend if it wins Best Picture. * The Shape of Water wins with no SAG Ensemble nod. * Three Billboards wins without McDonagh. * Get Out wins with no editing nomination. * Lady Bird wins with no editing nomination. * Dunkirk wins without any actorly representation (which hasn't happened since 2008) or screenplay representation (which hasn't happened since Titanic). * Phantom Thread wins with no major precursor wins or screenplay representation. * The Post is the first film to win while only being nominated for two awards since the 1930s. * Call Me By Your Name wins with no SAG Ensemble nod, no editing nomination, and no directing nomination. * Darkest Hour wins with no major guild prize to its name save for its lead actor.

That's my point. A new trend will happen this season.
