Hammer by far. Stuhlbarg didn't do that much for me.

A plank of wood in a good movie is still a plank of wood.

Both were fantastic and both should've been nominated. I give the edge to Hammer for a more consistent presence, but Stuhlbarg's big scene was perfect.

One was miscast and had no chemistry with his co-star. The other was a wallflower for 98% of the film, but crushed it in his final monologue. Stuhlbarg takes this with ease.

They're both very good in its on way. I still think Hammer was miscast mainly because of his looks but honestly he conveys pure light like few can, he's basically the sun ( hah ) but adds a bit of ambiguity to the part, at times he's quite clumsy ( his dance ) and he's very good at the guessing game.
But I slightly go with Stuhlbarg just because how carefully he plays the part and after that speech gives to his entire performance a new meaning or reveals a different side if you want to, it was so satifaying because a couple of scenes at first were rather off but once things were clear everything made sense.

Hammer was just given so much more to do, and played the yin to Chalamet's yang perfectly. Stuhlbarg has one great scene whereas Hammer is remarkable throughout.

As much as I loved Stuhlbarg in that one scene (because that's basically all he had), it's really no contest. Stuhlbarg's presence throughout the film is reassuring and warm, but he isn't utilized enough for me to prefer him to Hammer, whose performance evolved as Elio's perception of Oliver evolved. His chemistry with Chalamet was magnetic. I love the movie because of the central relationship between these two men, and Hammer played a major role in making that relationship feel real and intimate.

Stuhlbarg has a barnburner of a monologue but otherwise is hardly in the damn movie. Hammer wasn't perfect all the way through, but I think he filled out the emotional contours of Oliver very credibly and lent the final chapter the tangible pathos that it needed.

Stuhlbarg has the best scene, but Hammer's presence is crucial so the movie works.
