Armie Hammer getting snubbed reminds me of how I felt with Albert Brooks for Drive. It shouldn’t have been that surprising since he missed some major precursors but damn it still hurt.

That's what happens when you give David Thewlis some awful writing to work it. Zero nominations well deserved

Surprised Foxtrot and In the Fade did not make Foreign Language. Oh yeah Foxtrot is super shocking. It was lauded as a potential winner at one point! In the Fade was poorly received critically, I'm very surprised it won at the GG and got so far.

And yes, I thought Foxtrot would have been one of the first films to make it in, it looks like either On Body and Soul or The Insult kicked it out.

No Franco. Clearly affected by the allegations, but that's a performance worth rewarding.

I just noticed The Lego Batman Movie was snubbed, and for Boss Baby of all things. What do they have against that series?

Truly shocked by the McDonagh snub. No one saw that coming, but at least it was in favor for PTA, of all people!

I can't say I'm entirely shocked McDonagh missed. Not because that it betrays any sort of weakness in Three Billboards (it doesn't), but because his film is far more actor- and screenplay-centric than the other nominees save for Gerwig, and she was getting far more press and focus, so it was unlikely she'd miss. The Directors' Branch has seemed to venture toward flashier, showier direction these last few years, so it makes sense that passion-voting for all five of the eventual nominees forced McDonagh, a safe #3 or #4 pick on many ballots, to drop off. But as I've said elsewhere, don't think this kills the film's chances at all. It's still more of an overall threat at the moment than Get Out and Lady Bird (which missed key Editing spots, which in a non-Birdman year is usually a bad sign), and the actors' branch will rally behind it against The Shape of Water, which is more of the tech juggernaut.
